Don't Know if anyone has any expertise in this area , but i thank you for trying ... My 89 1/2 ton Dodge 4 wheel drive has performance problems .318 engine throtle body . I am told to turn the key all the way off and on 3 times , ,then turn it on the 4th time and watch the Check engine lite ,, COUNT THE FLASHES and record 1-2-37-42-42-11, then finally 55 stating report complete . why would it report 42 twice ???.. or is it 1-23-74-24-21 or perhaps 22????.. been to auto zone with this report and i simply have no confidence in the guy there ,, i don't know who was more confused , him , or me......Thanx

A long flash is 10 and a short flash is one followed by a pause between codes. So a long flash followed by two short flashes would be a code twelve. It's probably 12, 37, 42 and 11. 12 indicates faults were erased
37 indicates an open or short in the torque converter unlock solenoid circuit
42 is open or short in ASD relay circuit. ASD is auto shut-down circuit.
11 is no distributer reference voltage at PCM during cranking. If you have long crank time or dying when hot. it's probably the pick-up plate in the distributor. A quick check we used to do was tap on the distributor when truck or car was running-not the cap and see if it stumbles or dies. If it does go to Dodge and buy their pick-up plate. I've seen aftermarket ones act up when new. Hope this helps. Gerard

Ok,...THANX ,ASEguy... I think I get it. and I will share with My utoZone dude ..... 3 long flashes means 30 followed by 7 short flashes =37 RIGHT ? , that would be one code , then the next series of 4 long flashes would indicate 40 followed by 2 short flashes =42 ,,,.Thanks for your help This is much better than Reinventing the wheel ./.. the pickup plate could indeed be a problem ,Truck has those Symptoms , And I will get that from My Chrysler dealer Torque /convertor /unlock circuit ? what does this device DO ???? appreciate Your knowledge, could I speak with You for 10 minutes to learn More ? email is open to send your Ph#

I'll let you know later. The torque converter clutch is used for limiting slippage in the torque converter. This increases fuel economy. The circuit is open like a light switch turned off. Problem is usually the solenoid. Wiring cannot be ruled out so you would have to ohm the wires from the solenoid to the PCM to see if they are broken. Corroded connections can also cause this. Gerard

By the way I would also replace the ASD relay. I believe ie powers the injector circuit and if it goes out you will be sitting. It's a standard ISO relay on the firewall I think. Should have a green wire with an orange tracer. Get one of those while you are at the dealer.
