41 Farmall H front end wobbles at speed

I have just restored a 41 Farmall H. I put two new tires on the front, packed w/ grease and put it back together. Took it for a test run on the road and at about 5mph the front end starts shaking badly. Any advise on how to fix? Thanks.

For now let some air out of 1 tire. The bushing in the lower bolster could be worn. Could also be the worm gear in the steering gear box. Could also be some loose wheel bolts or worn holes in the wheels or hubs

Most likely the worm gear in steering box. May be able to tighten a little. Have to take the front sheet metal off and take the top off of box.

couple other things to look for, check for a bent rim, and also check to see if the rims are mounted evenly on the cast centers. run one of the wheels up on a 2x6 so the other is off the ground and spin the tire. then do the other side.

The bushing in the lower bolster gets my vote, and most likely the shaft is worn also. Both can be fixed.

You did not say if it was shaking before the new tires. IF it was then the bushings would be suspect BUT if it started only after the new tires then I would look at the tires. First would be to make sure the beads are seated properly and then second rotate the wheel and tire and see if it is running true or running out of round, that is where checking to see if rim is tight in correct place would take efect, if it is then would look for a tire that is defective or out of round.

EricW is right on that was an inherent trait with all those Farmalls. That upper steering box was hard to keep adjusted. We always liked it when we put on the four row mounted cultivators on the Super M to calm the front end down or mounted corn picker.

My Fordson's front wheels will start to wobble if I put it on the Highway and get into top gear, slow it down and it works normally.Everything up front has been repaired.
I suspect it is a worn steering box.
