OT - Car Rims - Aluminum?

Hi. Neighbor next door put to the curb 4 car tire rims. I was thinking that if they were aluminum, I'd probably get a buck or 2 from the scrap yard for them. Problem is....I don't know.

How can I tell if these rims are aluminum or some other metal that ISN'T magnet conducting? Yes...I did the magnet test so I know they aren't steel.

Thanks!

Aluminum rims, even those that are unusable have quite a bit of value. Check with a car parts recycler. Most here won't sell an aluminum rim without a trade-in rim. Or else, the price is substantial.

There are companies that rehab aluminum wheels. In my town (Tewksbury, MA) a national company has a facility with thousands of reconditioned wheels. Sorry, I can't remember their name but Google will know.

They will buy. I have sold them eight aluminum wheels in the past couple of years. I got $25 each. I'll bet that most of their inventory comes from salvage yards. That means they are paying more than scrap value.

I think the term Mag wheels meant magnesium, but I don't think many wheels are made out of magnesium. The way to tell the difference is cut off a shaving with a knife and try to light it, if it's magnesium it will burn very fast and hot!

Reminds me of a couple of years ago, a high school classmate of mine, who was always kinda like Paul Revere's ride, (a little light in the belfry), took a set of four beat up mag wheels to a local scrap iron place. They were going to give him $46 for the set. Only somehow or other their computerized check writing system wrote a check for $4600.

They didn't catch it at the time, so this bonehead went home, cashed the check, and bought a pickup. A couple of weeks later, the scrap iron place caught the mistake, tracked it down, and called him and wanted their money back. Of course, he no longer had it.

Last I heard, he made a deal to pay $100 a month till it was paid back. I won't bet the farm on that ever happening. A good question is, though, since it was the scrap iron place's mistake did they really have any legal recourse? It's not like the guy went in intending to pull a fast one intentionally.

The term "mag" wheel originally meant (50+ years ago) a wheel made of magnesium but such wheels are very expensive and non longer used by hot rodders except in special cases. Wheels made of magnesium were never mas marketed by OEM manufacturers.

Showcrop,

I had to look it up on Google to make sure I knew what you were talking about. I know where it is but have never set foot in the place. It's a breakfast joint and I rarely eat breakfast. I rarely eat lunch and dinner, too. I survive on ice cream and Pringles. I go for the sweet and salty.

If I recall, you are from Derry, NH. Have you ever eaten at French's Sub shop? Randy French grew up in my neighborhood.

Well I have them now....so if you want to buy them, let me know. :) Otherwise, they are going to the scrap yard when I go next week to take another load of metal.

Reality is, dollar in my pocket is better than in someone elses. Cheap? I think not. It"s called being smart and capitalizing on a situation. Remember the saying...one man"s trash is another man"s treasure.

since you already have them, you might post a pic of them, since we dont know exactly what rims they are, somebody right here might take them off you and you'll get your money and the rims will go to somebody who can use them

Good wheels, advertise and let somebody have a chance with what they need. Just had to buy one for a spare $30 cheapest to be found and over a hundred mile one way, average used price $75 with some yards wanting $200 a wheel and this is a factory wheel for a 2000 model compact pickup.

ALuminum wheels (dismounted, no stem, no weights) are going for $15 scrap here in Va. I'm constantly pulling 'em out of the tire bin at the dump, dismounting 'em and hauling in lots of 10 to the local scrapper- easy money.
FYI, the scrap yard is about a mile from our landfill- one day folks will learn the value of the stuff they toss and the secret will be out
