How reliable is the select-0-speed trans in the smaller ford tractor? In the early 1960's my
Dad bought a new ford 6000 with the select-o-speed. We put almost 5000 hours on this tractor and ford gave us a brand new tractor for this one at no charge. We had a lot of problems with both tractors, but not with the trans.

Later model Ford S-O-S transmissions are just about bullet proof if properly maintained.

Dont they free wheel going down hill in certain gears? I have never heard alot of good things about them.

They did a tranny upgrade to make them better through the years.

The first ones were good idea, a little rough around the edges. Gave them a bad name.

The later ones were pretty good; but there are 3x as many parts in there. With a few parts no longer supported. And a machine over 40 years old.

So, they sell pretty chepa around here - you assume it's got something wrong with it that will be more complicated & more $$$ to fix.

JD went on to make the idea into one of the more respected & wanted trannies around. So it wasn't a bad thing. But - still has a bad rap, and they are old on a Ford by now. Makes them less valuable, but really liked by people who have a good one.

Again the free-wheeling was in the early ones. I have a 1959 that has no serial number, but it has a plate indicating that it went back to Ford for update then was retained at Ford for sometime before being sold again. I have worked it regularly for about 10 years with no issues.

the few people i know who have had or have one that works well seem to like them, the early ones got a bad rap due to a few problems thay had and also many mechanics really didnt know how to work on them when they were new, laterones are better as noted already parts may be a problem if you cant pick up a sos parts tractor

LOL jerk-o-matic is what dad called his 6000 commander. He had the "dinner bell" go out of his whatever that is but the motor went 10,000 hours before an overhaul. The ring and pinion in the rear end went out, but dad thinks that is because of the turbo he put on it. Still uses it quite a bit. Grandpa had one that had new bearings in it but factory rings and that was last year!
