How much is too much?

I’m rebuilding an older Hagie 470 high clearance tractor to use as a sprayer for my sunflowers. Redoing the entire electrical system (it was a rats nest) and it has a V4 Ford industrial engine with a 12v generator and a Ford 3 terminal voltage regulator. Generator seems to work OK and it is charging. Voltage across the battery terminals is 15.7 volts when running. Is this acceptable or is it a tad too high?

Also anyone know anything about the Hagie 470. I have it jacked up and the wheels off. I notice when engaging the four wheel drive that the front wheels turn noticeable slower than the rear. What’s up with that?':?'

You probably need a new regulator and the charging voltage should be around the 14-14.5 volt range. Hal

Have you checked the ground on your regulator? A bad ground can create all kinds of havoc on a charging system. HTH
Good Luck and God Bless

The output of an alternator is determined by the condition of your battery. Try charging the battery first, then see if the voltage doesn't come down to around 14.8 give or take a litte.

A good battery, after sitting overnight, will read 12.6 volts. With engine running and charging system working right, will read 14.6 volts. Deviation from these indicates problems, the further off, the worse the problem. Greg

Hello TimWafer,
Anything above 14.2 Volts @ 70 degrees F. is too much.
Usually you can adjust the regulator and reduce the voltage. Sometimes the regulator will have to be replaced. It is charging, so all the gounds should be O.K. But they may not be.
Guido.

It is currently a generator not an alternator. I could change it over but like to keep things original when practicable. The voltage is about 12.5 volts when not running and the battery is new. All grounds are clean and new. I suspected the voltage regulator might be bad so will get a new one and try that first. I thought over 15 volts sounded like trouble.
Thanks
Tim
