OT GM 3.1L no oil @ valve train

Motor started making noise like the valve train did not have any oil. Pulled the valve cover and sure enough theres no oil, but no idiot light came on. Should a person drop the oil pan? Any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Have you checked the oil level? If you have I would pull the pan. I don't think installing a pressure gauge would help. Hal
PS: One of my former supervisor's had this problem when the lifters became noisy and the oil lite came on. Found the pump gummed up from sludge and the pressure relief was stuck open. We installed a new pump. It was Ford car with the 352 engine.

I checked the oil first thing and then changed it right away just to eliminate that possibility. Thanks for the response.

Does the valve train tick go away when you give it alittle throttle? How many miles on it? I have seem a few GM 2.8/3.1/3.4 liter engines do that. The bearings in the engine wear to the point that the oil pump can"t hold any PSI but there is lots of oil volume. I believe the oiling system on that series of engine oil the crankshaft and con. rods before the cam and lifters. I would bet the main bearings are wore out.
