851 w/no PTO shaft

So I'm in the market for an auger. I found what looks like a reasonable deal and told the guy that I needed to see if the output shaft on my Ford 851 matched his auger. So I see what looks like a cap covering the shaft and I try wrenching it off with a channel lock and it won't budge. So after cleaning the caked on dried out dirt, I see that the cap is bolted on. And I guess you know what happened (that I wasn't expecting) and I couldn't get it back in fast enough and lost a sizeable amount of hypoid.

So is there a part that I can buy that replaces the cap and has a shaft sticking out of it? I looked at my 9N and it had a shaft sticking out of it. Any chance I can swap the two so the 851 has an output shaft?

There is a shaft assembly with bearing and flange available. Whether or not you have the parts up inside the tractor to accept the shaft is another question. There may be a better answer over on the Ford tractor forum.

Thanks PopinJohn, when I pulled that cap off it had a shaft connected to it. The shaft is something like a foot and a half to two feet long with a spline on the far end.I guess it's really more than a cap because it has a bearing in it and the part that slips into the rear end is a sleeve about three inches long.

I took your advice and posted the same thing on the Ford Forum. Thanks again, Ernie
