New Holland 499

Having trouble with the pick-up reel and skipping in 2nd and 3rd cutting. I have checked all the settings and even after owning it 10 years broke out the owners manual trouble shooting guide. Anyone got any words of wisdom???

The pick up real is stopping ann not pushing the hay into the rollers. So in the shorter cuttings it is clogging the cutter bar and leaving spots not cut

Maybe take the belt off and roll it over. If you have a bearing out or going out, it could be enough drag to stop the reel. I had that hex shaft that runs behind the cutter bar break on 1st cutting this year. That stops the reel but also the left side sickle. The center bearing went out and it wasnt from lack of grease, cause I always greased it.

Check the sickles also to make sure something didnt change and they got out of time. The first 499 I had was off and it would skip, but the machine also shook. If I remember right the reel was acting alittle goofy too.

Good luck BW

Tighten belt on reel use some belt grip then replace it because its most likely worn out after 10 years.

Just dawned on me, If that hyd filter on the side is getting plugged or the machine is low on hyd fluid, it will do the exact same thing your talking about.

A couple years ago, the clamp went bad on my feed hose, it had a pretty good leak. I didnt notice it til the reel started acting funny, it would speed up and slow down. The sickle was doing the same thing and it was cutting like crap.
