Saturday morning we left the barn lot ot harvest corn in earnest. After a couple minor glitches we got 40 acres knocked out which is pretty good for us on the first day.

This is a 105 day corn planted april 13th. The moisture is 21, the yeild varies alot because of the wet spots and without the yield monitor calibrated I am not sure but it appears to be doing very well.
What a difference a year makes. Last year we started on October 8 and the corn was much wetter and NEVER did get down to 21. This is the earliest I ever remember harvesting corn. I recall harvesting once on September 6th about 10 years ago but nothing else even close.
This is my favorite time of the year. All of our work the entire year culminates in one final pass across the field. Something about the smell of a corn field being harvested and a wagon load of corn.

I better get going. Still lots of corn to pick! We will go take care of the cattle and then move to another farm.

And today is my birthday so I will go to town and get some doughnuts so we can celebrate while we are picking corn. Living the dream!

Happy Birthday Bill!

Heading down to Lake Argyle today - see if we spot you along the way.

Bill how's the test weight running?

Few who combined around here said it is light.

Matured to quick in the heat a few weeks ago.

Mine is still a little green so I am hoping the test weight is OK.

Thanks guys! Had a great birthday. Working with friends doing what I love and I got to meet Kruser. Nice weather and harvest is just humming along for us so what could be better?
Gary the test weight on this corn is 58lbs at just under 21 percent moisture. It is Dekalb 55-09. We picked Pioneer 35K04 yesterday and it was right at 60lbs at 21 percent moisture. These fields were planted April 13 and April 15. Looks like test weights will be better than last year as we had a couple hybrids that were barely making 55 but there were people that had corn right at 50 and they got a pretty big dock for that. So far picking just these early varieties it would seem there will be some very good corn yields. When we get to the corn on corn fields it looks like its going to be a totally different story. I dont think the term dissapointing will cover what we are going to find in some of those fields.
