farmall M casting numbers

I have a 1941 farmall M but the front tank is missing. I don"t know if the engine is original or what. The numbers I found on the engine are 7-16-E and 6943-DJ. The numbers on the head are 12-10-K. Does anyone know what these numbers mean? Thanks

7-16-E and 12-10-K are date codes, Thats the month, day and year the part was cast. 7-16-E on a M part would be July 7 1959. 12-10-K is December 10 1941. The December casting probably wasn't installed on a production tractor until 1942. Maybe could be on a 41 calendar year model if you have one of the last tractors made in December but not likely even then. 6943-DJ is the block casting #, that # was mostly used for replacement blocks for M tractors. Regular production M tractor that had no problems after assembly should have a block cast # 6722 DG or a lower last alphabet letter on your tractor. Another indication of a replacement block is it may not have a engine serial # stamped in the block.

Darrin: Guy Fay wrote a "Data.." book in which he explained some of the ways the factory coded the castings.. google guy fay or check amazon.. good ref book.. can't find find mine right now.
