i been looking for a hay hauler to replace the junk i'm using now...found a '86 chevy 1 ton with a flat bed,6.2 diesel,and 4 speed.
i barely can spell chebby, always drove fords...that 6.2 any good or anything to look out for on that vintage?
truck looks to be well taken care of but its 250 miles away so i havent checked it out in person yet.

Well with the proper gearing int he 4 sp and rear axle you will have a very good truck. The 6.2"s was a true diesel designed engine by chevy. Not a gasser switched over. They are easy to work on such as glow plugs and and such. Also the injection pumps are a common unit with parts around to fix them when they need it.
I had a 84 with to 270,000 when I sold it. The guy that bought it drove it till the body rotted off. He put the engine into another truck for a guy and its still going. They been knowen to hit 400,000. So if the price is right got for it. Its less power then teh ford 7.3 but still alot better thent eh newer electronic nightmares that some of the newer diesels can be.

They run good and get real good mileage, but your gonna think its the sickest dog you ever drove pulling a good load.My Dad and I had 3 of them over the 80's and 90's.They were OK for the time, but always underpowered on our trailers.Figure on pump rebuilds every 80000 miles, and we had quite a bit of cracked head trouble on one of them, none of them ever run hot.Injectors are easy to get out and new tips are pretty inexpensive. We kinda liked them, but Dad bought a powerstroke in 1995 and thats all we have had since
