my 8n tractor i bought recently will not charge.I have a 12volt system with new alternator. all wires seem to be getting power to them with test light. please help!!!

What type of alternator system do you have?? 1 wire or 3 wire and how do you have it wired up. Lack of info on your part makes it impossible for us to help you help your self

1 wire it doesn't appear to have any wires changed from original except I put a volt meter instead of ammeter.

Common problem with a 1 wire set up. Most take high RPM to kick them in and that is around max of what a tractor engine will do. That is the reason I do not use the one wire set ups hard on the engine because you have to rev . it up to max right after starting it up

If you put the volt meter in place of the amp meter and wired as it was wired, that is the cause. put a good amp meter back in where it was wired the way it was, then put a volt meter to ground from the same terminal that goes to the ignition coil (or ballast resistor) the volt meter does not conduct electricity in a way that operates things. Milliamps only. It is a very high resistance and nothing to speak of can flow through it ever. Jim
