Diesel sputtering

I use my JD 2240 to mow lawn & bush hog. Lately it has begun to sputter after about an hour. Acts like a gas with a bad plug.
Gas & air filters are new. Side screens and raditor are clean. Heat guage dosen't work but no loss of coolant visible. All lubricant levels are fresh and full.
What should I look at? Thanks.

As rick mentioned, fuel filters come to mind 1st & formost with a diesel. Sounds like you changed them, but - load a gunk in the tank coulda plugged the new one already?

I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but I was reading about the new diesel fuel we get doesn't have much lubricity anymore. Not good on injector pumps, injectors, etc.

Some suggestions were to always run an additive, like power service, stanadyne, etc. and some just mix a little bio-diesel in--they say that does it. Can't remember the year, but seems like anything prior to around 2001 build date could have this problem.

If you're low on fuel, or the fuels been sittin' awhile, that could be doin' somethin. There's finally a fuel stabilizer for diesel readily available, similar to "Stabil" for gasoline, to help keep the fuel fresher longer (than about 30 days).

Just throwin' stuff out there to take into accout.

Could be wrong about everything, had at least three or four too many concussions, (lost count) LOL--so bear with me.

Drain GAS and put diesel in tank because JD 2240's were only built as a diesel.

Seriously could be a plugged injector, inj pump timing off or valves may need adjusting.
