Giving the old AC WD a 16 foot workout...

After getting her back up and running well, we decided that the pasture could use some taming. We've done this in the past, it does a good job of knocking down the tall weeds (some at the far end are in the 4 to 6 foot tall range) as well as killing out the rose bushes, but it leaves the grass somewhat healthy and natural looking, provided you don't over-do it.

Also, it's a lot of fun. This is one of those 16' discs that you can "back up" and set to different cutting depths. Would prefer to use a 6' hydraulic disc, but we weren't really wanting to "cut" the pasture. This doesn't leave any rough surfaces or anything.

My Dad had one of those disc. It did a pretty good job of light farming. We had to fold the ends back to get it across the bridges between the house and one of the fields.

Oddly, the only picture I have of it, he has it behind his Allis tractor also. In the mid forties.

Whats with the hair. Or is you one of those of the age of the hippie LOL. O before you say any thing bad as per my question my hair is also long LOL

Guys joke with me I have to use blocks to reach the pedals. Looks like they need to move the seat for ya. Great pics. Nice to see some people still have some green around. Been so long since weve had rain everything is brown and dead lookin here in southern In. Gonna get an early start harvestin thats for sure

RusselAZ - Very cool. I really like this one, it's got a few discs with some chips out of 'em from many, many years of use, but it still gets the job done for as little use as it gets these days. If ever you want to use it in the field, you have to set it at a pretty good cutting depth and hit everything twice (once in each direction), but I have used it after the field has been plowed (with the same WD, actually), and it does a nice job leveling it all out. Does about as good as our 6' hydraulic one does in that regard.

old - I don't know, after high school I grew it out for college, and have just left it long ever since. Saves an awful lot of money in the haircut department, considering I get about a foot of it cut off for donating every other year. I'm only in my mid-20s.

Brian G. NY - Heheh, thank you. I have no trouble pressing down the pedals, that's for sure. I'm about 6'02" and 225. It's a 52/53 WD with a straight shifter dropped in it to replace the old style crooked one that was in it originally that ummm... Broke off in reverse one day. That, and the top six inches or so of the muffler have been chopped off because the weld seam was starting to split apart towards the top, but the muffler itself was in good shape.

nickg - Oh yes, we've been getting plenty of rain lately, but it looks like we may be in for a bit of a dry spell. It has been really wet and really hot this year, so the corn crop looks like it'll be a good one. I've seen some people who cannot extend their legs far enough to clutch a WD just because they can't slide themselves far enough forward in the seat (due to the steering wheel) to get it depressed.

So I went out this morning and worked down the pasture in full... Probably will have to hit it one more time before the year is over, but it worked fairly well. Only took about 2 hours to cover 3 acres.

Tractor was a little rough starting, but she finally fired off. But once I got her running and heated up good, she didn't give me any fuss.
