Iwill field test a new Woods finish mower tommorrow. Guess I want to get off to a lasting relationship with this mower and have heard conflicting stories about washing the deck. Some say wash each time and some say never. any thoughts would help me start off right. thanks in advance to you all. Allen

To wash something everytime may seem like a good idea but you could run into trouble. For example a friend of mine washed his mower deck on his new John Deere every time and the bearings rusted up fast. I always blow off my equipment with a compressor or leaf blower after every use so you don't get a build up of dust and dirt.. I do wash maybe a few times a year also

Whatever you do, don't let grass sit on the deck, that is the fastest way to get a rusted through deck with any brand mower. I usually blow our mower decks off every day I use them and pressure wash them at the end of the season and maybe once or twice in between in they have gotten really dirty for some reason. Just don't peel the paint off of it. Good paint is critical for a mower deck's long life.

I used to power wash a deck after every use. In about a year I started having bearing failures. Now I just keep them blown off and the underside scraped.

Bought a woods RM 500 and the deck had rust holes after 10 yrs. Reused the spindles, gears, pulleys, added front wheels, and had the gearbox galvanized. Made a new deck and spindle covers out of SSt. That was 20 yrs ago and it looks brand new today. Also made it into a 6' mower that uses RM600 blades. Woods parts are heavy duty but their decks rust out.

If you want to wash it after every use, go ahead just make sure you grease it after you wash it to get the water out of the bearings. I mowed about an acre with mine, and greased it after every use. Still on the same 22 year old bearings and belt.

I find there is more rust on the top side of a mower deck than on the bottom side. Don't mow wet grass and the grass won't collect on the bottom side. Leave the mower outside and water will collect on the top side of a woods and it will rust. I'm a believer that water will damage bearings. I never leave mowers or tractors outside for that reason. If you are worried, get underneath and scrape off the grass and blow the grass off the top side.
