polarizing generator

I need to polarize my generator for my ford 8-n. this has angle mount distributor and is 6 volt. I know you have to put a jumper between two posts to polarize on voltage reg. Do I jump between the bat. terminal and field? or between bat. and arm. the manual says between bat. and gen. but I don't have a gen. post on the regulator. any help would be great. thanks trevor

farmall cub dave posted on 12-11-09 and John T answered superbly. search that post, How to Polarize a Farmall Super A

Watch it! Your Ford is a B circuit not an A circuit like that Cub. The procedure is different. I have not done a B circuit in 20 years so would need to look it up tonight. J.

If I answered that on a Farmall or JD Board it ONLY pertained to Class A gennys NOT Class B. Looks like Bob says 8N is an A so its still correct, however

Leave the polarize bit alone.Good way to smoke your regulator.I ve been working on generators for 0ver 50 year, never polarized one.The first time the engine starts and the cut out closes the in rush of battery voltage will polarize the generators field poles. This happens ever time the engine starts.More damage can be done with th polarize bit than good. Why do you have to polarize your generator anyway?

Lets call this types instead of class A or B.This refers to the way the fields are connected.Polarizing is a Dufus method that ruins regulators.
