Magneto Questions

Ok, I am magneto challenged (AKA I don't have a clue about how they work beyond the general overview that they make a spark and send it to the plugs).

I have an american bosch magneto. It has no spark so I figured I would open it up to see what I can find. I found the cap has 2 pieces of plastic material missing, but I don't think it will affect the operation of it. The 4 contacts that are on springs, in the cap, have wear (the faces are at a slant), how much wear is acceptable? Points look a little dull so I figured I would replace them since they are cheap. Any easy way to check the condensor to see if it is good? Anything else I should be looking for while I have it open?

Thanks.

I'm thinking the points are not cheap as most are made of unobtanium. Just carefully sand the points gap to 15 th and most likely it will work. Personally I prefer a mag to any dist system.

You should pass a sand paper on point and clean with a clean tissue and remove the wire from the condensor and clean too the connection

Many years ago, my dad's old 1940 vintage cub with a bad mag. To fix it, I used the old points and condensor, disconnected the mag's coil, hung a 6 v coil on the tractor and sent the spart to the center of the distributor cap. Worked for many years.

Many of these (new points) have softer contacts than the ones you are replacing. Too many made over seas with low grade metal. I would just clean up the original ones. Magnetos usually don"t burn the points as bad as a battery ignition.
