Gate Opener Blues

Installed a Mighty Mule auto 2 gate swing opener 2-1/2 years ago. Have had numberous problems and have ended up talking with tech support 6 different occasions to try fixes on various problems the system has had. Now the slave arm has failed. ($550 for new arm) I believe it is due to the quality of construction as we use about 50 duty cycles per week. Gate is 6' per side and 70# per side. Our temps range from low of 5 to high of 90 on average. Does anyone know if you can buy a heavy duty screw actuator arm and substitute it for the failed arm? Thank you for any input.

they are called linear actuators, they are available in 12volt, 24volt, and 110volt models. they are available in various leangths of pull and some can handle as much as 2000lbs of pull. do a google search to find a supplier near you or an online supplier you can order one from.

I bought a Mighty Mule gate opener about 12 years ago and it opened my large gate many times with no problems except low battery in extended cloudy weather. Act.Arm mounting bracket on arm broke and I never had another long lasting Mighty Mule so I bought an Apollo gate opener. It's much better built than the MM.

I've got a Mighty Mule with a bad motor. Company will NOT just sell you the motor. They want to sell the whole arm ($200 for refurbed). What's infuriating is that the manual gives troubleshooting info to disassemble and check the motor, which I did. I'm now looking all over for a replacement motor. I think they're about a $25 item. I've heard that they're used in RC cars and I'm going to take the motor to a hobby shop to see if I can get a replacement or a cross-reference.

Poor public relations. If I need another gate opener, Mighty Mule will not be high on the list, although Guess I'll look up Apollo.

Looked at the list VaTom posted. Only problem is that the actuators that look compatible (voltage, stroke) are as much as the Mighty Mule replacement. Not sure if the motors will last any longer or if the circuitry would be readily adaptable without any messing around to get them to work.

If I can find a replacement motor, I'll post online about it. Seems to be a common problem with these units.

GRAINGERS have actuators, and sell parts for
must everything they sell. They may have a motor.
Can you inentify the brand of actuator by make
and model, or the make and model of the motor ?
Or has the MM company blanked the labels out,
in order to force customers to return to them?

I am sueprised how many people buy them when you can make a real nice gate on rim rollers and hook it up with a garage opener.garage door openers seem to be alot more heavey duty than those ready made gate openers.
