Not tractor but used on the farm to mow around fence lines , Never failed to start until now , seems to be fuel related , but need some help , fuel flows on the engine side of the filter , but still no start, add fuel direct to plug hole in one cylinder , starts and runs , turn off , no start again, any and all help appreciated, B&S 17hp twin cyl 4 stroke. It has some safety features , mow in reverse allowed , switch under seat broke , mowing table and engage to run speed lever live. With the rain we have had the grass is taking over.

Does it have a float bowl type carb or is it one with out a float?? Does it have a choke set up on the throttle control?? I would pull the air cleaner off and if it has the choke set up make sure the choke is working. And if it has the electric main jet set up that could be going bad

Had an 8 hp Briggs on a lawn mower, same thing. Only way it would start is take the plug out and squirt gas in cyl. Had the valves ground and it started like new. I guess it couldn't get enough vacuum to bring in a rich enough mixture to start.

In addition and like Old says,

Hold your finger on that fuel shut off solenoid. Turn the key on and off. You should feel it snap in and snap out if it's working properly.

Also, they have a nasty habit of kinking the fuel line down below the fuel tank because of the way that the tank is squeezed/shoved down into it's mounting.

However, if you have good flow at the filter, the rubber line is probably okay.

Thanks Allan & Old, This is a gravity feed , there is a fitting on the side of the motor ,after the filter , which more than likely is the fuel solenoid , and fuel shut off valve can't find anything on the internet to show a parts diagram , I will have to look again , yes there is a separate choke lever , but don't know if enough fuel is getting by this fitting ?.

FUel pump. It is a black rubber piece with two little flaps that work off of vacum from the crank case. Or maybe the vacum line going to the pump has come loose
