Any info on 7040 allis chalmers?

My bro in law and I am taking over the family farm and we are adding acreage and the only tractor we have is a 4030 JD. We have found a 7040 allis maroon belly and we want any info we can get on it to see if it will fit what we need it for. It will be used as a ground working tractor. What was this tractor originally designed for. Thanks

Good tractor can be used for tillage harvesting an all round good tractor. Just like any other tractor it can break down too. If you’re looking for something with a little more power maybe four wheel drive look at an Allis 8050.

Your Allis 7040 is a big tractor, much bigger then the JD 4030. Your post does not specify how much land you are talking about farming. Here is the link to the Allis 7040 data.

Hope this helps. I think the key decision factors would be:
1. Hours on tractor
2. Parts availability (11,000) made
3. Cost of tractor
4. Condition of tractor, hydraulic pressure, tires, rims

my neighbor has a 7030 and 7060 allis. about 110 hp on the 30 and 150 hp or so on the 60 . both good solid tillage tractors. parts are available. the 30 was majored last year, dropped a valve and it went thru the turbo. but the tractor had high hours. i ran both and they are comfortable tractors. good solid inexpensive horsepower.

I have has a 7040 AC that has about 2000 hrs on it. I used it to pull nh4 bar & ripper. It was turned up to 150 hp. It has been a good tractor. A low hr AC may be a better deal than a high hr JD that is worn out. In good condition such as mine they will go for about $8-10,000 if they hae power shift. I also have JD's that are good tractors so I am not color biased.

AC 7000 series had some bugs in them. If they have been abused much or not properly maintained then they can get very expensive to fix. A very good friend is an Allis man. He has a 7040 and never gets more than 3000-4000 hours on an engine before using oil and needing overhauled. It has had the transmission out twice too in 9500 hours. All of the repairs have been at the local AC dealer.
He is not abusing the tractor either. He has two XT190s and a 200. All of these he has gotten good service out of.

Stay with what you know-JD.keeping the same equment makes sence because everthing fits--Hydralics,weights,accessorys,hitch and pto dimentions will be the same. The AC is probally a good tractor,it will be kind of an odball in your operation. If you can afford it,spend a bit more money and buy a tractor you will probally be lots happier with.Another thing,What about a dealer and service?AC dealers are getting kinda scarce('least around here)
