new generator polarization

i just installed my reworked generator on my 51 8N 6volt positive ground. I failed to polarize it before I started the engine. Have I damaged the generator? I read in my manual that to polarize the generator I was to touch a wire to the "bat" terminal and the "Gen" terminal on the voltage regulator. My regulator has "bat", "fld", and "arm", no "Gen". What terminaql do I touch.

It did not hurt a thing. The ARM is the same as GEN, it will spark a nice fat spark, hold it for less than a second, more than just a brushing contact it is then good to go. Jim

I doubt you hurt the genny, its the Voltage Regulator that can be damaged if the genny is polarized opposite from the battery. Id polarize (like Jim told you) it BEFORE you start her up again then see what happens

Nothing. If the generator was tested it is polarized. If it was used in a vehicle it is polarized. If it has been sitting for years not used, the residual magnetism in the field iron cores might have dwindled to the point that it will not self start from lack of that magnetic force in the iron. Polarizling just puts that magnetism back in the field core (not the windings, the iron they are wound on) If a generator is switched from Pos ti Neg, polarizing is all that is needed to make it switch. You have been lucky, is all. Jim

Did the wire polarization. Started her up. Zero amps. Amp meter shows discharge when starting.
Already replaced ignition switch, coil, coil wire, only thing left, I guess, is the voltage regulator, however it looks good. Is there a way to check volt output of generator while it is on tractor. Have volt meter.

Friends and I got hold of a cutdown Model A Ford that had been sitting idle with a cracked head for 10 years.Generator started charging when we got it running.

This is an ongoimg problem. No matter what I do as far as polarzation I get no positive amp reading ( negative only when I put a load on the battery).I've installed new regulator. Taken the gene back to the rebuilder and he showed me on his meter that he could get 90 amps out of the gene, but when I put it back in the tractor I don't get any amps. Any suggestions ?
