How do you guys estimate yeild on soybeans per acre. I had a guy tell me to pull a random plant and count the pods. Just curious, thanks. The pic is me and 2 of my boys checking things out a month ago.

The ONLY way to succesfully estimate soybeans yields is to harvest them. You can count pods and cipher till the cows come home and it dont mean a darn thing! Watched a Pioneer soybean agronomist who is in charge of tens of thousands of acres of soybean parent seed production inspect a field of experimental soybeans we had planted for the Woodhull production facility and he was sure it would be the best beans we had EVER raised. Not even close, they were ten bushells less than any field of beans we had that fall but they were some of the biggest prettiest beans anyone had ever seen. After that I quit trying to guess, if he couldnt figure it out, aint no point of me even trying.

Its nearly impossible, year in and year out. Going from 1/4" diameter soybeans to 5/16 diameter effectively doubles the volume of the bean. That is one reason why water(rain)is so important to the yield at pod fill time.

I'm with you guys on this, gotta let the combine roll for me to know. I've tried different "guessing games"with nothing close to the actuall yield. Just didn't know if anyone had any thing I hadn't heard about. I usually guess low as to not be disappointed.

I work for a crop insurance company. We have appraisal methods for all crops, and at all stages. But until the crop is really mature, and partially dried down, It still goes back to SWAG.

I've had short thin stand beans go close to 60 Bu and have had 4 foot tall beans go 40 Bu. Just never know. Corn is is a little easier but still a little of a guessing game. Guys around here a predicting an all time record yield. I'm not so sure. The ears are filled nicely and are long, BUT, I'm not liking what I'm finding with the kernel depth. Talked to one of my seed salesmen today and he says the agronomists have the same concern. Theory is the hot nights may have hindered kernel fill. Just never know till its in the bin.
