you have seen, most likely, the tv commercial about mahindra tractors being no. one sellers in the world.. i think i remember at one time massey ferguson was no. one.. i could be wrong..what caused the change. have a nice day

Last I knew Massey was still number one. If anything overtakes them,I'd think it'd be Same. They don't sell under their own name as far as I know anymore, but they build models for all of the other companies, including mother Deere.

????

mahinda is the old international plant in India. When International shut it down, the Indians bought it out and started the mahinda brand. But the tractor on the line at that time was nothing to get exciting about.

Television is for entertainment purposes only. What you see and hear during the commercials MAY have a grain of truth in it, but most often that truth is greatly embellished.

As others noted, Mahindra is an Indian company. 1.1 billion people live in India, about the same as the USA and all of Europe combined. Add in the fact that farming in India is still on a much smaller scale (not a lot of 600HP articulated 4WDs there), so there are a lot of small farms with their own tractors. I don't find it hard to believe they sell more than anybody else.

The Mahindra brand pre dates the closing of the IHC plant by many years.

A new Mahindra dealer set up shop about 4 miles from me about 8 years ago. They closed the doors after a few years and now the building stands empty. I don't know of one sale they made. I just did a search on the Mahindra website for dealers near my ZIP. The nearest one is 70 miles away and the next one is 96.

Massey is still the biggest seller world wide and have been since 1962. There are quite a few tractor manufacturers in India. To say Mahindra is the best selling in the world is more than a stretch of the imagination. Dave

I believe the commercial claims that Mahindra is the #1 selling COMPACT tractor in the world.

Compact tractors is a small subset of all tractors.

Mahindra's sales are mostly compact tractors. In fact I don't know if they have a tractor larger than 50HP.

Massey Ferguson sells a lot of compact tractors, but they also sell small tractors, midsize tractors, large tractors, and articulated tractors.

OVERALL, Massey sells the most, but Mahindra beats them in compact tractors, probably by a small margin.

You got 'em pretty close then - for me it's 110 miles tot he nearest, 202 miles to the 2nd nearest....

Mahindra sells the most. Period.

Looking at the US and Europe alone, they behind Massey, Deere, etc. Mahindra exported about 1,000 tractors last month.

Within India, however, they sold over 13,500 tractors last month. Deere and Massey-TAFE don't have factories there simply for cheap parts. They build to sell in India. It's a huge market.

I read on here which means its gotta be true some time ago that IH tractors like the B series i.e. B-275 B-414 were Mahindras is there a thread of truth in that? I know that tractor dates back around 40 to 50 years ago.

Good old usa last year UNDER 100 hp. Kubota more than trippled the sale of Minhandra..Ever where they set up a dealer as soon as the new dealed discount ( one year) the sales slow down or the dealer closes. Haven,t caught on very good here in Tennessee

What's this mother deere sh-t.Why do people use this phrase????Needless to say it pizzes me off.If you HATE Deere, just say so and be done.

yes it does, but they still bought the plant and sold a spitting image to the international.. even the part numbers matched the first couple of years... The ih384 and the mahinda that came next were identical twins..

thanks to everyone..very good discussion..i learn from this site.. have a good day

No surprise there! Mahindra made the 384, and 444, & 424 & B-414 &...Not to mention the first Willys Jeep & all those buses outside the US. Navistar is big in buses in the US. Navistar & International & Mahindra have had a joint endeavor for years.

There are over 1 billion people in India. Mahindra is an Indian company. Indian folk are switching from using draft animals to tractors... 1 billion people need a lot of tractors. They're perhaps 70 years behind us in that development...

I'm afraid the idea of MF selling the most is nothing more than a wet dream to some.
MF is nothing more than slice of AGCO which optomistically could not be said to be more than 1/4 the size of Deere. Mabey if AGCO sold nothing but MF tractors... then mabey they'd sell more than Deere. I highly doubt either one sells anywhere near what Mahindra sells.

Rod

MF accounts for over half of all Agco sales. JD is the number one tractor seller in N. America for all tractors in general. World wide MF sells the most tractors. JD may be a bigger company overall than Agco but as far as tractor sales world wide, MF sells more. JD used to be number 4 world wide for tractor sales. Ford was number 2 and I think IH may have been number 3, so JD may have moved up a position. Trying to discount MF as number one world wide for tractor sales is like trying to say Cat doesn't sell the most crawler tractors. The numbers come from sales figures and aren't just pulled out of a hat. Dave

MF used to sell a tractor about every 3 minutes 24/7 365 days a year. India is not a bigger market than the whole rest of the world. That's ridiculous. Dave

93% of all statistics are made up on the spot so they say....

A good friend is employed in global marketing for John Deere (turf equipment) . He's told me on a number of occasions there is no such thing as accurate information on who sells what and who is truely the sales leader in #'s of tractors sold. Every brand uses a different formula to indicate total sales of tractors. Every brand seems to have some sort of propaganda that says they're #1.

Bottom line, it doesn't matter one bit to me personally who CLAIMS to be #1. That's for people with too much time on their hands to sit around and debate. ALL I care about is who makes the particular tractor I need and who can sell them to me at the best price.

#1 as in number of actual tractor's sold? #1 in percent market share? #1 in dollars ?
Lets not forget Mark Twain's famous quote.

I would expect that India is a larger market than the rest of the world... for two reasons.
1. There is over 1 billion people.
2. They are going through the change from oxen to tractors. They're using small tractors in many hands as opposed to virtually all of the rest of the world who use a few large tractors in even fewer hands.
They're in a place and time similar to where we were at in 1940... Where Ford, IH, Case, Deere, and mabey even Massey Harris /Ferguson were all building over 100K tractors per year. Not to mention a list of others as long as your arm who were actively building tractors.
Today... I'd wager to guess that the entirety of the present day parents of those brands aren't building much more than 100K units per year worldwide.... but India still has that large market.
So does China. It's just a bit further behind.
