nurse tank for LP tractor

Thinking of making a nurse tank for my propane fueled tractor. I had the idea of taking an empty hundred pound LP tank (the upright type used for heated livestock water fountains, etc.) laying it on it's side and drilling and welding fittings to it for the vapor and liquid LP couplers and mounting it on a trailer. Anyone see problems with this? Smallest tanks I've seen have been the 250 gallon tanks for outbuildings, don't think I need anything that big.

Your propane dealer probably wouldn't fill a home made tank like that. But one of the larger tanks like they use on warehouse forklifts might work. Depending on tractor model you could maybe do some adapting and be able to swap out the tanks like they do on the forklifts.

I don't believe anyone would be willing to fill it. It would no longer be a legal DOT cylinder. The pressure relief wouldn't be in the vapor space. Without a pump there wouldn't be a need for a vapor coupler. You could do just as well with an adapter to the existing valve and standing the tank upside-down temperarly[not recommended]. Better yet use a fork lift cylinder or find a 124 gal. tank.

If you get the connectors and the right valve and hoses, all you need to do is turn the 100# tank upside down to push liquid out. You will have to vent the tractor tank to the atmosphere. Or do what I do and have the propane truck stop by when He's in my area and fill em.

I always used a 100# cylinder for this purpose, in emergencies I would use a 20# (not possible today with the OPD valves). Fill and transport as usual, turn the cylinder upside down to get liquid out of the bottom. I had a hose with a liquid connection on one end and a fitting for the 100# bottle on the other it worked great. I wish I still had my MF 35 with the LP setup!

O.K. while we are on propane some body tell me what I need. Have several gas/propane forklifts with the horzontal tank laying down behine the driver. Even have extra nice aluminum tanks. Was at an auction the other day and bought a late model JLG man lift. the squirt boom type. They call it dual fuel. Has a nice little 4 cyl ford running perfect on gas. The propane mount is for horzontal tank about the size of the forklifts so I am thinking I am allright no problem.. Get it home and the JLG has a fitting I have never seen anything like. I guess does anyone know do the late model lifts carry a diffrent type cylinder. Haven,t been to my propane supplier yet?

Rich, Do not go and start modifying a odd LP tank of some size or another I do not belive a regular LP dealership will fill it, also the chance of blowing your self up. If a 250 gal house tank is too big then look around for an old 100 gal pickup bed tank, that should be about the right size for you to use,,,No modifications needed. Hope this helps.

I have an old swinging meat, refer trailer. I think 32' that I use for storage. It had a propane fueled thermoking unit on it which I scrapped. Horizontal tank underneath is still there iirc, About 75-100 size. I don't use/need the tank.
I could look at the condition next time I'm up at my land. I had thought of mounting the tank on a little trailer but never needed to. Might suit your purposes?
Email is open.

So, if I could get a 100 lbs cylinder that was intended to disspence liquid I would not have to turn it up side down correct? The local LP dealer has tanks there the highway deparment uses for the asphalt melting tanks. They are liqiuid units compared to vapor tanks I use for the stove.
This is a very interesting topic. I have a Case 600 standard LP. Been wondering how to feed it. Did catch teh LP truck her one day to put a little in it to try it.
Thanks for the ideas folks.
Bob

You can buy the CORRECT valve to allow Liquid LP withdrawal from a 100 LB tank. Look for P/N 9107K8A or 8555DL11.6 The last one will let the tank be fill while it is supplying fuel to a load.

Thanks everyone for the helpful advice. It was just an idea that came to me, figured I should get some other opinions on it. Going to pass on the hundred pound tank and look for a small tank designed for what I want to do.

If you can find someplace that is converting old Schwan's trucks back to gasoline, get a secondary tank off of one. Will have to be a 2000 or newer so it has the Bi-Phase Liquid Fuel Injection system. It will have all the required fittings and valves to be legal for motor fuel use and will have an electric fuel pump inside that you can use to transfer the fuel.
