paint over rust

Has anyone used "paint over rust" on rusty parts/tractors/cars?

What prep did you do after putting it on to paint?

Thanks.

If you are talking about the POR-15 paint it will tell you all the steps if you buy one of their kits, or on their website. I have used it on a few truck frames before and they still look great. It is a three step process with two prep/cleaning steps before painting. Do the steps and take your time and it will come out looking great.

I"ve done 2 jobs like that. Painted a trailer using the Eastwood product 3 years ago, still looks great. No rust appearing anywhere and it was very rusty when I painted it.

Recently painted my loader, after using Tractor Supplies Rust Kutter product, then painted over with normal paint. This job is only 6 months old, however still see no signs of rust.

I agree with you 100% on using <a href="http://www.por15.com/Complete-Kits/products/11/">POR-15</a> paint.

It"s a bit expensive, but the results are worth the money.

Nancy painted our driveway security gate at the farm with POR-15 and it still looks good.

Be sure to wear disposable gloves and be careful not to get any on you; it"s hard to remove from your skin.

Not the exact same brand, but it gets used alot around here on fences and gates. Just wirebrush, dust off, and paint.

I have used their gas tank sealer kit on numerous motorcycle and tractor gas tanks with great results too. I do agree, a bit more expensive then other products out there, but I have been very happy with the results. The real test will be now living within two miles of the coast on my truck frame. So far it looks like the day I finished painting it.

Also agree that POR-15 is great stuff--have used it on several truck frames and other difficult applications with excellent results. As noted, for best results, you MUST follow the instructions--it's not as simple as "pick up a paintbrush and start slapping it on". There's a cleaning step, a neutralization step, and the painting step, all of which have to be done and done correctly. However, when done correctly, it's a VERY tough, durable finish, and as the paint covers well and lasts a long time it's actually cheaper and faster than doing it wrong or slipshod multiple times.

Like James said, wear gloves. I tried several solvents to get it off my hands. None of them worked.

Also, if you buy it in the gallon can, be sure to use a piece of plastic wrap when you close it back up. If you don't and you have any paint in the groove where the lid sits, you will NEVER get the can open again.

I've used the plastic wrap and it works.

Its been about 3 yrs since I painted our gates. I didn't do any prep, but the gates were bare steel. There's no rust spots showing anywhere.

POR-15 is a bad company. I don't know about now but 10 to 12 years ago they made their dealers charge a set price for their product. One dealer started selling at a lower price and POR-15 threatened to take their dealership away. So that dealer did comply by charging the set price but gave free shipping. POR-15 took their dealership away. No matter how good their product is, I wouldn't buy any.

Maybe they just want all their dealers to sell it at the same price? That way a dealer can't get undercut by another dealer. Kind of like buying a Saturn was. They had a set price no matter where you bought them. Seems like not a bad idea. Dave

Used POR gas tank sealer. Did all the recommended proceedures they listed. Heat dried the tank. let it set 48 hrs then used it as recommended. Tank sat around for over 3 weeks . went to fill the tank, and the WHOLE LINER CAME LOOSE .Son took it all out (IN PIECES),wa so discourageing results. Used it on the 706 tank with good results, butTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT now were GUN SHY on this product. Wondering if we should try it again. Company refunded the money we spent plus shipping cost. Only out the time. Dozer is running and nothing in the tamk in way of rust protection. Any other product available?what do you guys use?? LOU

That is called price fixing. That is illegal. They can have a suggested list price, but they can't force someone to sell at a certain price.
