O.T.,Chickens And Eggs

We got some 2day old chicks in early April and they are getting to be full size now. My question is how long should we expect to wait before we start getting eggs form them. We have the nesting boxes and room they need. I would have thought we might have gotten some by now. Thanks in advance.

5 months at the earliest, 7 months at the latest. Sort of like saying "my daughter is 15 and she has a boyfriend, I thought surely we would be grandparents by now"
Be patient, when it's time.....it's time!

Having or not having a rooster does not matter a bit as to when you get eggs unless of course all you have is roosters then you never get eggs

What breed of chicken are they? Some breeds start
laying like clockwork, some are really slow out of
the blocks and don't like laying in the winter. If
they are anything like the breeds we always get for
our egg business, then I'd guess they would start
firing up in mid-September, or maybe early in
October.

Sounds like it is hard to tell eggzactly when they will begin laying. Don't have a daughter but sure hope she wouldn't start laying at 15!

I understand that but the why even ask if it does not matter other then to waste a persons time. LOL ya got to give you a hard time sine it does not matter either way. Oh by the way been working with chicken for 30 plus years or is that 40?? Yep over 40

(quoted from post at 21:40:18 08/11/10) lighting also plays a factor as to when they will lay...

cheap florescent or cf light and a timer will get you eggs straight thru the winter in decent climate.

I had New Hampshires and some homegrowns from the NH and a big white rooster. Everything I had started laying right at the 20 week mark.
I fed wheat and oyster shells and put a dissolvable multivitamin (for people) in the water once a week. Got better (bigger and darker) eggs than with store bought feed. If you don't have greens in winter, a handful of rabbit pellets a few times a week is nice.

Good Luck,

Dave

Back during WW11 we didnt have electric and ours laid all winter . Eggs were even picked up on the farm cased up and ready to go.Good bedding water and ouster shells along with good feed ration by todays prices cheaper to buy eggs.

Should be any day now. We got our chicks the last week of March, and a few hens just started laying last Friday. We have 15 hens, and getting 2 eggs a day so far. Figure on around 18 to 20 weeks of age. We have 6 nest boxes, but they're only using one yet.

I got mine the 2nd week in February, They have been laying staedy for a month now. I also have 15 hens and 3 roosters.

The eggs are sure better tasting than from the store.

We have 9 nesting boxes , I guess we should start expecting a few any time now. We have 17 hens, but the wife thinks one might be a rooster. We have some Bantam Frizzles,Bantom Silkies, some R.I. Reds, and some barred rocks and a couple of silver laced wyndotts. We have 2-3 of each.We Also have 3 Boxer dogs and 2 African Grey parrots that are all house pets. What kind of house pets does everyone else keep.[/img]
