Weedy Wheat Round Two

Started in on this weed infested wheat yesterday, which has been drying for a few days. Don't know if there is a bonus for grasshoppers or not. :>)

Both test weight and protein are down because it has been rained on twice, however we're getting a good marketable product.

Only issue I'm having is that the cheat grass is overloading the shoe fan and trying to plug the chaffer; I have to clean it every couple of binfuls.

Gotta remember to clean those windows too. :>)

I am; really am. So proud of that old Gleaner that I could bust a gut. :>)

Crawled up in the bin with a coffe can and showed my neighbor what we were getting for our efforts.

The look on that old fella's face will be with me the rest of my days. "Ja-yesus H Ke-rist!" was his response. :>)

Told him that the grasshoppers came at no extra charge. :>)

Now this is what farming, and being a farmer is all about.
Part of it is fighting nature and not your fellow man.

HEY wait just a minute...THAT COMBINE AINT RED! I can't believe it.

Still a nice looking machine. I know what color put that wheat in.

This ol' boy uses a double hitch, 24' # 151(?) International shoe drill.

I get "aroused" every time I look at that drill. :>)

And you get to sell your wheat at 2 or 3 bucks higher that most had to do this summer. Although someone said it dropped 60 cents on Friday (probably after your harvest report). Have a good one.

Grasshoppers are nomal around here too.

One year, had to clean frogs off the shoe every 5 rounds or so..... That was a bit of a strange, wet year.....

I ain't a monsanto fan, but some pre-harvest Roundup would have been well worth it!

had to do??? you have to sell a steer when its ready. but wheat will keep many years. maybe should build grain bins. Paul

and I know what color pulled the drill! You know good equipment Allan. My drill set is one 510 and one 5100....hey I know good equip but still have poor ways!

To spray Roundup he would have more in it than swathing it. Guys around here charge $12 acre to swath. If he had sprayed it, the chemical, custom spraying and the wheat they would have run down would have been more than $12 acre. Plus the roundup probably would not have gotten the green stuff under the canopy.

Those old Gleaner conventionals will put any other brand to shame when it comes to getting a clean wheat sample. Keep up the good work. Jim

How do you spell Finesse? Early spring application with a 10 units of N will hold the weeds back until well after harvest.

It's a COMMON practice around here and works WELL, but thanks for the opinion!
