My little piece of the world...

DeltaRed asked for pics of this area and my place. This is the best probably the easiest way to show it. In this area, farm HQ's are in town and fields are scattered outside. Those fields are from 1 - 15 or so acres with 2.5 - 5 being common. I don't have crops so I have about 9 acres of fruit orchard scattered over about 12 pieces from 1/4 to 1 acre. If something looks like it is dotted with trees, chances are that I have it fenced.

Enjoy,

Dave

My place (point of the little A flag is the corner of our back yard. Behind the clearing belongs to someone else. Our place is as wide as the clearing and goes forward to the street. Most everything you see in this link is/was farm places. Livestock was/is kept under roof. Within a hundred meter circle of our place is a hog farmer with between 100 and 200 hogs, a guy that milks about 40 cows along with raising about 100 rabbits, chickens, and ducks. Another raises about 50 feeder calves a year. All crop farm as well. Equipment mostly kept on the home place.

Can't see things that plainly on my computor but are all what comes up for me in black forest land or are they lakes? Is it in mountain area or flat land? Also exactly what part of Germany are you in? Family is from what they here are calling the Alsas-Lorain(?) area. Never been able to figure out where it is. And I am from northwest Ohio. Ever hear the names Helmlinger or Huebner over there?

maybe the link isn't working right for you. This is houses and fields with a few patches of woods. I am in northern bavaria almost in the middle of germany. The links are google maps, so you can zoom them out and get oriented. When did your family leave germany, that area may have been a region that no longer belongs to germany (after the war). Plenty of huebner's in this area, Helmlinger's are farther north and south.

Used to go on maneuvers to a place we called Wildflecken down in that area. Gorgeous country. Seems like there used to be a military complex in Schweinfurt.

Dave, a question. Was Schweinfurt in West Germany before reunification? I flew into Frankfort and on to Munich (Munchen) in 1986 and I know both those cities were in West Germany. I've just finished reading CITIZEN SOLDIERS by Stephen Ambrose and BEYOND BAND OF BROTHERS by Dick Winters. Just curious. C.L.

Dave, I take it you're not too far from Nurnberg. In 1954, I was at Merril baracks in Nurnberg, which was the old "SS Kassern" under Hitler. I was there about 6 months. I was a radio operator in the 2nd A/C regiment.

West Germany but the border is about 25 miles away. get#s lesser by the year, but it's like driving through a time warp.

60 miles. Nurnberg is all closed now as far as Americans.

My great, great, Think might be missing a generation, grandpa, dad and then me at 67. Think was either 1829 or 1839 that the first Helmlinger came over and built up his place and went back to Germany to bring his family across. The Huebner family was my Mom's side and think it was a couple of years later they came over. My grandfather (no great in there) was born the same year Lincoln was assinated
