So what I want to know is- was the semi driver the only one out of four drivers paying attention?
A girl ALMOST turned left in front of me yesterday at a light. I was driving a 54000# truck. She was talking on the phone and STOPPED and WAITING when the light turned green. But she started to move apparently before noticing little old me coming down the hill. Fortunately she did notice me and jerked her car to a halt just after hitting the gas.

Hello Bob: From the computer generated play back that the evening major news TV had yesterday, yes the 19 year old seemed to be paying attention but as she got back behind the semi, the semi started a slow down for road construction ahead and I'd guess the school bus driver could have slowed sooner or quicker and not hit the pickup would have maybe been better.. With all that said, I don't like guessing from news reports and from second hand info. Best to just say it was a real bad deal all around.. ag
(Ps Bob, Today I found I had only ONE bearing that had drilled hole and maybe lube as mentioned it Combine forum. )

The way it was reported on my local news channel was that the pickup WAS already stopped behind the semi tractor. The driver of the pickup was in no way at fault, but he is dead anyhow.

Looks like it was BOTH school bus drivers that were NOT paying attention.

I think they should be an age limite on drivers that haul children, no one under thirty and no one over 70 , and be required to take both written and driving test ever two years. Why do I think this because I also drive a school bus.And its alot of responsiblity. And the teachers need to keep children under control, and in seats at all time. I pray for all these families.

I drive bus as well and DO NOT wait for teacher to keep kids sitting in there seats. If they don't liosten to me I pull over into the first exit with a service road, stop the bus,get up and do some seriuse PR.If that don't work they go home with no trip to anywhere. It always works for me and I have no troubles on my trips any more.BTDT.

St. Louis local news just said it could take 6 weeks to investigate.Seems like every summer that section of 44 between Eureka and Rolla has a bad wreck that involves kids on the way to Six Flags.Sad sad day.

Absolutely. I appreciate our rights and fear their loss. Driving is not one of them. It's a privilege, and a big one. I don't understand why as a nation we accept so much carnage and death on the road. Our state has made it much harder for a young person to get started. That's no answer. I think with today's electronics and simulators there could be much more thorough testing of ALL drivers.
My rant on the opposite side is a pet peeve of all of us pilot types. One little aircraft incident/accident and it's a government agency/media circus, then the first thing you hear from the FAA is "You need to submit to further testing, or lose your license"!!!!
Can't we have a little balance?

Very tragic. The morning news said one of the bus drivers was watching the mirrors to make a lane change and didn't pay enough attention to how fast she was coming up on the traffic ahead of her. There might have been distractions going on inside of the busses right at that moment. You know how everything seems to happen at once sometimes. Jim

Driving a big truck I always try to be careful around WZ, but....too many drivers act like they are in such a hurry and you have OFFENDED them by trying to do the lowered speed limit etc, even other truck drivers! I know nothing about this accident but please realize that there are as many IDIOTS driving big vehicles, rigs, buses etc that should NOT be behind the wheel of anything PERIOD....I am amazed that we dont have more tragedies like this. poor families are grieving today. This should not happen ever.

Nebraska has a 60 year age limit on bus drivers.

I can see how the drivers could have been distracted by wound up kids going on a field trip. My wife once drove a bus on what was recognized as the rowdiest route in the district. They finally put someone on her bus to ride shotgun so all she had to do was concentrate on driving. Then, to settle arguments with parents, they put a video camera on her bus. The camera ran whenever there were students on the bus. The tapes sure deflated and shut up a lot of parents who were all set to defend their kids when they were kicked off the bus.

This is a true tragedy. I was on the road between Los Angeles and Houston when this wreck happened. The 1st spin by the radio media was the evil truck driver must be at fault. They never did apologize or correct that initial report for several hours. For every idiot move I see by a truck driver I see 10 + by four wheelers. The fact is we, tractor trailer drivers, sit at an eye level 5+ feet above the cars. We can see alot further and react quicker. We use CB radio's to communicate with each other as to traffic conditions. I have an FM traffic moniter built into my GPS unit that tells me about delays. People just can't stand to be behind trucks. They do some really high risk things to avoid being behind me.I had a ring side seat to a traffic fatality recently. Road construction on 2 lane freeway with lots of signs and warnings to merge left/right lane closed. Car decides to run hard trying to get to the front of the line and hit a dump ruck before he could get over. Running too fast and misjudged how much room he had. All over not wanting to wait in line. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has just passed a bunch of new regulations aimed at CDL holders. Basically warnings, equipment failures, log book violations, non moving violations, etc will accrue points the same as moving violations. It won't directly affect me as I typically don't break the rules. It just doesn't seem fair to target CDL holders and not all drivers.
Ok my rant is done.

That streach of I 44 is a Way out outside of St Louis, but have seen many rear enders on that part of highway around St. James.
