OT/ small engine carb with no adjustments

Thank You B & S for putting a carb on thst has no adjustments -- if it did I could have fixed the motor faster than posting this.

Any idea how to fix? I dumped carb cleaner in the tank and ran it for a hr or so, it still hunts, and stumbles.

You need to do an actual cleaning on it. Take it off, take it apart, soak it (ultrasonic cleaner if you have one) clean any passages, blow it out, put it back together.

The average owner of a low cost engine doesn't know how to properly set them anyway. By the time a carb would actually wear out the low cost engine would be long dead. Finally with the improvement in machining tolerances that exist now there really is no need to have an adjustment screw as they are all machined pretty much exactly the same.

In my experience most sputtering actually has nothing to do with mixture ratio, it is crap in the carb. Only way to fix is to clean it anyway. Sure you could open it up and it will run ok for a while but as soon as that little piece of whatever moves now you are running rich.

Maybe something under a sacrificial casting cover?
We have a weed eater that actually runs now after adjusting the hidden idle and main screws.
As for why all these adjustments are blocked? Anybody here ever voted abundant/nnalert? Or didn't do something to block the nazis that use safety and environment as a means to power over you?

I ruined an "O" ring by letting carb cleaner set for a half day

Been dealing mostly with Kohlers, fixed jet carbs and all that is inside is an "O" ring that can be replaced along with needle shut off for the float.

"Hunting " could be a worn throttle shaft that we instead of buying a $3.00 replacement part go to ACE Hardware and get a .98 cent 1/8 X 1/4 brass bushing . I do not know the size for Briggs though .

You may thank high paid federal bureaucrats for this and countless other nonsensical developments.

Your tax dollars at work.

I have a 20 hp kohler command with no adjustments. Went to kohler's web sight and found the problem. There were 3 air vents that had dirt in them. A buff of air in each fixed the problem that carb cleaners and fuel cleaners couldn't fix. See if B & S has a web sight.

Don't blame this one on the bureaucrats. Making a carb without adjustments is good for the manufacturers.

Unfortunately perception is reality. If you by a Briggs that doesn't start, you adjust the carb and it still doesn't start, you will tell yourself that the briggs you bought is crap.

Most consumers are too stupid to use a carb with accessible adjustments. As soon as their engine doesn't start for any reason (including no fuel, bad plug, flooded etc.) they fiddle with the carb screws. In most cases this makes it so far out of adjustment that there is no way it could run.

Briggs, along with other manufacturers removed adjustments for 2 main reasons:
1. Because they can.
2. Because most people are too stupid to know how to use them and too stupid to leave them alone.

Remove the tank and carb assembly, remove the carb from the tank, locate the crud that is down in one of the recessed areas of the tank, blow it out with compressed air, reassemble the unit, install on the engine and start it up. While you're installing, make sure the Oring seal is in place in the throat of the carb, and not stuck on the intake tube instead. I just went through this myself on a 2 year old mower. It runs better now than it ever did. I think that "Oring" never was installed properly from the factory.

I change all push mowers to the older style carbs that have adjustments. You have to change the blow-by tube and the throttle bracket that goes over the head [held by three head bolts]. With the newer carbs, I always had to put a new gasket/diaphram every year. I grab every push mower engine I can out of the city dump so I can always have a supply of fit to use carbs.

You can thank the boys in DC for that. After all they know more than us mechanics do. Plus it helps out the engine builders. Why sell a carb kit. When they can sell you a new carb. Most problems caused by trash in carbs.

My B-S, was giving me what may have been the same trouble and after fueling it with some straight E-85, it ran fine on gas. Be aware that the E-85 may damage components, in some fuel systems. My opinion is that ethanol, is a far better cleaner-solvent, than internal combustion fuel.

(quoted from post at 01:54:56 08/05/10) WHY blame B/S for what is mandated by the greenies/EPA, for Pete's sakes???

Why does everything have to be blamed on the government. The last EPA regulations to affect the small engine industry limited 2 stroke use, emissions and fuel delivery, not carburetor adjustments.

There are still engines made by all the manufacturers every single day that have adjustable carburetors. You aren't going to find them on a lawnmower from Walmart or a pressure washer for Tractor Supply. They do exist.

At my last job we were shown papers from the EPA. That required small generators to have non adjustable carbs. True or not I can't say. Just recalling what I was shown.

Are you sure it's not the governor? This last month I finally replaced my 33 year old BS lawnmower engine and the only trouble I had with the carb was the springs and attachments to the blade/vane governor. Does the engine "hunt" if you hold the thottle plate solidly with no load?
