Very OT: China and Volvo

Well it's official. China has officially entered the world market where they have had little success to date. Namely quality world recognized automobile manufactureing. Geely Holding Groups Founder and Chairman Li Shufu announced a $1.5 billion dollar deal with Ford Motor Corp. for the purchase of their Swedish Volvo unit. I wonder when and how soon the Chinks will move production to main land China so products can be labeled " Made in China"? Who's next,Saab,Volkswagen,BMW,Rolls Royce,Ford ??

Not quite. The GM Hummer was a long way from being a military vehicle. It's just a fancy pickup truck/SUV that appeals to people with "little man syndrome". The military HMMWV is made by AM General, a completely different company.

Get your facts straight.....they didn"t buy the AM General Humvee. They bought the General Motors' Hummer line. Big difference.

bob

And my understanding is that the sale never went thru, so the GM Hummer line is ending after this year.

You are right, they may have??,not sure yet, bought GM's Hummer/Suv/oversized show truck line but you are wrong, they did not buy A M Generals HumVee Military vehicle line of assault vehicles. If I am not mistaken all parties backed down from the Hummer sales talks for the present.

We were short military Hummer parts and to touch all bases we called civilian Hummer, they said nothing would fit.

A few years back Volvo took over the Champion Road grader company in the town I'm next too. They bled the company of all it's technology and shut the doors last year. This area suffered quite a bit because of them. As far as I'm concerned it's good the chinese got them because if the jobs are gone from here it really dosen't make a difference where they go. Best part is, after a hundred years of supporting the local manufacturer, all the townships and counties are buying John Deere....

The first clue something is wrong here, is the fact it used to be above average in materials and craftmenship...imho...probably ford just couldn't handle the differences in the crap they put out vs a well built car. Lost money and sold out the company. The Chinese see this. I would bet they will do well with it.

Screw the hummer..gas guzzlin co2 emmitting pos...never should have been on the roads.

> As far as I'm concerned it's good the chinese got them

Actually the asset that was sold to the Chinese company was just the passenger car line (which Ford bought from Volvo about 12 years ago) Volvo AB is the Swedish manufacturer of trucks and construction equipment. They weren't involved in this sale.

My oldest daughter in very high in managment with Volvo auto gp and they have been told things will actually be better,, i.e. more money and no changes planned.. Ford just did what they could to survive. Volvo auto sales have remained very constant in all this down economy. She is really excited at this time but who know. She started out in parts with them over 20 years ago right out of college and they have really been good to her.

Steve I think that Volvo construction equipment is a different company than the car maker. They split off five to ten years ago.

In case you hadn't noticed, most things are relative. The British were positively gleeful when Ford took over Jaguar. Especially when they threw out the Lucas (Prince of Darkness) electrics. Their only lament: "Now we won't have an excuse for being late."
