charlynn instalation

I just finished putting a good used steering unit( worm gear, and complete steering sector), IN MY 335 Minnieapolis. It now turns right and left, lock to lock, if you have arms as large as tree trunks, or have a floor jack, taking the weight of the loader off of the front end. I have went to Charlynn, on the web, and want to get a unit, to put on the steering shaft, on the left side of the tractor. my problem is the site doesn't tell me what other componets that I'll need. Will I have to hang a truck power steering pump, from the front of the motor, or can I get the oil, and pressure from my tractor hydraulics? Not being a hydraulic mechanic, I also am not sure if more components are needed. ADVICE PLEASE!

If you use their "Torque Generator", it just installs in-line with your steering shaft. Placed on top of it, it makes your steering wheel sit about 5" farther back/up.

If you use the tractor hydraulics, you will need a power diverter valve which is not cheap. I have seen a GM power steering pump used also.

If you buy a new torque converter, you can get a heavy duty unit which is for tractors with loaders.

I put one on a John Deere 60 one time. Only question I have is,is that MM open center hydraulics? The old Deere was. What I did on that one was to just cut a piece out of the main pressure steel line coming from the pump. It was awful thin, but I threaded it with a 1/2 inch pipe threader, screwed a black pipe pipe coupler on it then brazed all around it to make sure it sealed up. I ran a hose from the pump end of it right through the steering unit, then came out the other side and back into the other end of the line,so the oil was still flowing just like it would except that it flowed through the steering unit instead of straight through the pipe. ONLY drawback was that if I used the hydraulics when I was turning, the power steering stopped. Might be a problem with a loader on it until you get used to not steering and raising the loader at the same time.

That is the WRONG way to do it.

Frankly I'm surprised it even worked, unless the Deere actually had CLOSED center hydraulics.

With an open center hydraulic system you need a priority valve, which is installed in the pressure line between the pump and the valves. Priority line goes to the power steering, and they're usually adjustable to

The priority valve will give you power steering AND hydraulics.

You're right about the last part, but the CharLynn unit was open center and by running right through it,not using a T in the line,it worked just fine. Like I said,UNLESS you used the hydraulic remote while steering it. I'm not even going to argue about it,it worked.

i sent you an email if you want a copy of the char-lynn manual. i have them scanned on my puter, i can shoot you a copy.

I had a neighbor in Texas that took a lot of TLC
with his equipment. In the early 60's he traded
his U.B. mm in for a new 4010 J.D. I went up and bought the old U.B. He had put charlynn power steering and had put a J.D. rolla-matic front end
under it. The power steering pump looked just like a pump off of a car or pickup. I ran J.D.
70's at the time. But that old U.B. was the easiest driving tractor that I ever drove. You could litteraly drive it with one finger.
