New member on here. Lots of great info. I have a 1994 LX176 with the liquid cooled kawasaki. Was mowing the yard last week and when I just finished up mower died and would not start. Pulled hood and checked fuel. Fuel was filthy and had red varnish tint to it. Pulled tank and cleaned out. Pulled carburator, cleaned, and replaced bowl gasket. Replaced lines and fuel filter. Checked pump output and flows very well. I can crank on mower and will start and run great for 5 seconds and shutsdown. Spark is strong. I bypassed oil pressure switch and coolant temp switch. After shutting down very hard to start. When it starts runs for 5 more seconds and shuts down again. Im lost. Could this be a choke problem? Or more fuel related. Does not shut down roughly. Just shuts off and then hard to start. Bypassed seat safety switch permanately. Please help as yard is getting tall again.

Thanks,
Dave

You probably need to soak that carburetor in carburetor cleaner and blow out the jets. There's probably more of that dirt in there. Hal

One thing that jumps to my mind is the $20 timing delay modual. It lets the engine run 5 seconds after you turn the key off. It'll run ok for a few minutes, maybe 15, and then it dies and needs to cool off again before it'll run. Had to replace the one on our 425 (20 HP Kawasaki V-Twin) this spring.

Another problem we had on ours 425 was a few years ago an electronic do-a-ma-jig that controls the fuel by the carb. That one someone else diagnosed and fixed.

Both gave similar symptoms, but if your's has the TDM, that's be my first bet.

When you cleaned the carb. did you remove the jets or just blew out what you could see??? If it is really dirty than you need to remove all of the jets and soak it over night in a good carb. cleaner.
Also check and see if the fuel solenoid is working. It screws into the side of the carb. bowl. Just take a jumper wire from the positive battery terminal touch the solenoid terminal and you should hear it click. No click and it is bad.
If you have a old fuel tank off of a small engine. Hook it up to your carb above the engine level. This will tell you if the fuel pump is bad or not. They are pricey so you don"t want to replace one unless yours is bad.

My carburator does not have a wire to it as there is no fuel solonoid. I did not pull the jets out of the carb, but if they are clogged would it even start at all as it runs great for seconds. In the past I have also had the intermittent problem with the key switch, it will do nothing wait 10 minutes and it will work. Im wandering what the circuit board on the key switch does. Does this board have anything to do with shutdowns? I dont believe i have a spark problem as when I try to crank it back up I have verified spark. Thanks for all the replies. I want to think this is a fuel related problem but the 5 second shutting down does not seem to indicate this.
