valve spring length

I received a rebuild kit for my 8-n. when Iput the valve assembly together I noticed that I could put the whole thing together without a valve spring compressor. Are the springs to short? or do I wait until they go in the block and compress them for the horseshoe clip. It seems very odd to me. this is my first flat head motor, but far from my first rebuild. any help would be great. thanks trev.

The valvesprings DO vary in length from the ones used with the old-style "mushroom-tipped" valves to the springs used with rotators to those used without rotators.

HOWEVER, even WITH the right valve/spring/washer/rotator combination ALL will be "loose" 'til they're installed in the block and the guide retaining clip is installed.

In other words, assemble them into the block, THEN see what sort of tension they have to seat the valves.

thanks bob. I got the engine kit from y mag so I thought I did good, But some times the wrong things end up in the wrong baskets just makin' shure. thanks for the info. trevor.
