Wagon Hoist

Had a little boo boo today with the dump wagon. I need to find a source for a cylinder for a 10 ton midwest wagon hoist. Its a 6" diameter and 24" stroke. Anybody know of any sources?

Yes I looked over at surplus center. Whole hoist for 1800 bucks. One cylinder that I think I can make work.

Does Midwest still manufacture hoists?

Bill,

I've got one. When ya coming this way next ? I can get it tested and yanked off for ya.

Picture if ya like.

They make boat trailers and boat hoists there now and call it "Shorlander" I believe. That is in Ida Grove Iowa.

Is this on a 12' wagon? I have midwest hoists on two 10' wagons and two 12 footers, and I'm thinking the 12 footers have longer cylinders in the hoist. Here in northwest Iowa Midwest hoists used to be all over the place so I'm sure there are a lot of them laying around. Today farmers are buying the barge wagons removing the box and hoist and using the running gear for a header trailer. A machinery jockey or consignment auction might be a place to look if you don't need a fix right away.

Is the rod bent? If it isn't bent too bad you can straighten it reasonably well and it'll still work. It's a single acting cylinder so you don't have to worry about messing up a rod seal. If the weld blew out at the base of the cylinder you can re weld it. Jim

This is on a 12' bed I would guess. Its a grain truck bed on a running gear. Works great for us to haul dirt, junk, firewood and whatever else. It has the bigger hoist in it and I have not seen another one as big as this one on sales. I just bought a whole hoist a couple of months ago but its only a 20" cylinder. It would be a last resort cause its shorter and it will loose dump angle.

It blew the snap ring out the top of the cylinder. So the piston cocked inside and bent the last 3-4 inches of the bore. Do you have any creative ideas how to fix that one?

I would really like to come out and see you on the high plains but I am not headed out there anywhere in the near future. Shipping would be too much of a pain... there has to be one closer somewhere. Thanks Allan

Princess Auto in Canada has all sizes of hyd. cylinders. 24" stroke is a common size. Off the top of my head, I'd guess around $350/$400 for 6" bore cylinder. Dave

Those hoists where not made for high pressure hydraulics. I blew the end out of one twenty years ago. It happens when you let it hit the end of its stroke. That little snap ring was made to hold back a system with 1500 psi or less. Your newer tractors can have up to three thousand psi.
You can replace the cylinder with one that has a smaller bore and the same stroke. A tie bolt cylinder is the cheapest.
Bailey Company is a good place to get cylinders too. http://baileynet.com/

I have a Midwest wagon hoist sitting in the barn. Not sure of the cylinder size but if you were closer to me you could have it.

Did you get a cylinder for your hoist? If not I have one. jps
