I can not send or receive emails on my high speed
(supposedly)internet I call customer support and they tell me to call Microsoft. I have Windows XP and Outlook Express. Everytime I call I get somebody in the Phillipines. Would anyone have any ideas on what I can try before I pay Microsoft?

Who provides your email account? If it's with your ISP, you need to talk to them first. There are four pieces of information you need to know: The address of the POP (or IMAP) server, the address of the SMTP server, and your POP/IMAP/SMTP account name and password. That should give you everything you need to set up your email account, whether your client is Outlook Express, Thunderbird or whatever. If you have all this information entered correctly into your client, then it should work, simple as that.

Mark,
If Cas has ATT and is using Seamonkey browser and email, ATT will not help. They say they do not support Seamonkey. However for a fee they will help. Boy that T's me off. Maybe you can give me a clue as to what is wrong. I have set up a new email address and when I go to access it it says password is wrong. I know I have it set right because I went into my existing account, this one and set it exactly, you know the POP, SMTP, the security and the port. Only difference is the new email address. I still can't log in because of password.

I had the same problem, took two Century Link Tecks to figure it out. Get your pop address and Smtp addreese right( tools, accounts) then delete /clear all other attempts in sent, inbox, draft etc, reenter user name and password,(tools accounts) Should work. I have had no problem getting teck support through Century Link, formerly Embarq.

Open up your Control Panel. Check the "Internet Connections" and the "internet Options-connections"

yeah, in your outlook "accounts" check the properties of your current account and you should have a little arrow on the right that opens up whatever you had before the HS internet...should have the new account listed there..pick it and set it as your default connection...

turn off your firewall and anti virus and then see if email works...those 2 types of programs cause just about as many problems as they prevent.

Check with your server. I had that problem and they found it. My inbox was full and the last message that was coming in was too long couldn't finish receiving it, it locked up both in and out going mail. They deleted over a 100 inciming emails that someone had sent me(?).

ldj, I'm not familiar with the Seamonkey browser. I assume it must have a built-in email client. But it shouldn't matter which email client you're using; the POP and SMTP servers don't know what your client is.

Has this account worked before and stopped, or is this a new account? If it was working, check with your ISP & see what changed.

If its a new account, make sure the mail server information in your e-mail program is correct. In Outlook Express, go to Tools -> Accounts -> select account -> properties. Make sure the server type, incoming mail address, outgoing mail address, account name and password are correct. Your ISP can tell you the correct values for everything except your password. These settings are the same regardless of your e-mail client.

You also need to make sure the security settings are correct for your ISP. The ISP should be able to tell you what they are.

Go to your ISP's web site. There should be a link to e-mail settings for the common e-mail clients.

Microsoft probably can't help unless you actually have a problem with Outlook Express itself, in which case you'd simply download the latest version.

I'd bet money its a problem in the e-mail client settings, as described above.

ldj,

Did you set the password for the new e-mail account? Each e-mail account can have its own password, and if you didn't specifically set one you can't get into the account. Automatically transferring a password from one account to another is a big time security risk.

What on earth is Seamonkey? You can't expect the ISP to be up to speed on all the intricacies of every oddball program out there...they' spend a fortune supporting a very few customers. If you want free support, stick with the common browsers & e-mail clients. Makes perfect sense to me that an ISP would charge for support for a program that's rarely used, particularly one that may have some oddball characteristics.

A bad email in the Outlook Express outbox will clog things up. If you have any messages in the outbox delete them and see what happens.

I'm on AT&T and found you have to know the proper port to match the required security level or it doesn't work.

I've always used netscape mail and just now started using thunderbird on one computer. We've always had multiple users and multiple profiles so I've never figured out how to use outlook or outlook express. Netscape 7.2 is getting crash prone but the multiple profiles never transfer the bookmarks and stuff right when I've tried firefox and thunderbird. I've got a couple computers I'd start using outlook on whenever I find someone to walk me through it. Probably have to hire a high school kid to explain it too me.

Seamonkey is a fork of Firefox/Thunderbird. Good point about the email password; some ISPs make them the same for all accounts for the same user, while others set a different password for each account.

When you get the call center in the Phillipines simply tell them that you are in an area of the country where you are not exposed to accents and that you are having a hard time understanding them. Ask for an agent/tech located in the U.S.

Worked for me for another company and instead of spending a lot of time online with an Indian tech I got a U.S. tech who had the problem solved in just a couple of minutes.

Best of luck.
