Engine Rebuild Kits

If you recall, about a month ago I found antifreeze in the oil on my 886 International. Finally got around to finding the problem, and it is #5 sleeve leaking pretty good when pressure is applied to coolant system. So, rebuild time.....
I have 4 kits available, and I was wondering if any of you guys have ever dealt with any of these companies, and is so how was your experience?

South East Tractor parts- Cost of $1025 shipped to my place.

Diesel Engine Kit Distributors, Portland Oregon- Cost of $1240 shipped, and includes a two year parts/labor warranty

RF Engine kits, Michigan- $1195 shipped

And then a local tractor salvage/parts place near me- About $1600

Thanks for any information.

I take a totally different approach. In this case you may not feel that you need any engine machine shop services. I generally(but not always) want a head at least checked while I have it off. The engine machine shops always seem happy to sell kits, etc. And I want them happy. Here they are competitive also. Maybeit's an old fashioned notion or presumption on my part, but I still think I get better service face to face than long distance.

I agree totally, if local people don't support local business who will. The same ones that don't support local business are the first ones to raise He-- when the go out of business.

Talk to your local guy. Tell him what you've got (prices) and try to negotiate with him.
He may be as low as he can go and stay in business, but I doubt it.
I don't think its right to do price peddling but times are tough. Good luck

Whatever you do, ask lots of questions. With so much being poorly made in the land of almost right, I avoid that stuff like the plague where ever possible. I endorse buying local whenever possible. It's too bad the nearest AGCO dealer treated me like they couldn't care any less about my parts business. Too bad for them as they have missed out to the tune of about $3K so far on a D17 A-C restore.

Hey, thanks for the tip. They are cheaper than any other place I have found. You've had good experience with Abilene machine?

Thats what I try to do. Local machine shop is usually cheaper than what I can find. I normally get him to assemble the short block, he charges 300 bucks and if the parts and assembly come from him he guarentees it to be right. I'd rather pay that than make a mistake on something and end up getting to do it again on my dime.

Check out PowerMaxx kits. I ordered mine through Walt's Tractor parts online and they treated me very well. The only reason I ended up choosing them initially was because they were the only place to offer the high compression kits for the AC 301 diesels at a reasonable price. Looking back, I am very happy with the kit. All of the parts in my kit were made in America (Clevite bearings, Hastings rings if I remember correctly, their own sleeves and pistons made in, I believe, in Iowa, and a gasket set they had put together). It's been a little over a year since I bought it, but I have talked to another AC guy that I found out later on was a dealer for PowerMaxx and he said those were the kits he used in customers' tractors unless they wanted a budget rebuild (then used TISCO parts).
