cattle weight

I was wondering I have holstein steers and if there is any formula using a tape measure in differant areas on the steer to figure the weight Thanks John

I don't have a formula, but I have seen a chart many years ago which gave a body weight for holsteins based on a measurement taken on the animal of the circumference of the chest, just behind the front legs. You would get this by using any string, twine, cord, rope, or flexible measuring tape and then measuring the length of twine, rope, etc. The chart may have been in the book Morrison's Feeds and feeding, but I'm not sure.

There are tapes available with the girth (in inches) on one side, and estimated weight on the other. Think we got one from one of the AI companies years ago.
