tractor transmission oil

My ford 1715 tractor transmission oil was milkey when I changed the filter(it was bent) and I decided to change it too. They had 5 or 6 kind of oil in different weights and additives. Clerk was no help. Anybody know what oil to use in this tractor and more importantly what to avoid

Glen,

I have a 1972 Ford 3000 Gas tractor - I use Traveller Universal Hydra-Trans from Tractor Supply in both my transmission and hydraulics. Sounds like your engine oil and hydraulic fluids are mixing which can produce a milky look - Your hydraulic pump may be sucking engine oil back to your hydraulics. This happened to me a few weeks ago – The hydraulic pump needed new seals to correct the issue.

Milky generally means water and the mixing of engine oil and tranz/hyd fluid producing a milky oil is a new one to me.

I believe your tractor uses Ford/New Holland 134 hyd trans fluid

But you can also use CaseIH Hytran (the best) or JohnDeers HyGuard (real close 2nd best)

Condensation over time will cause this or if you leave the tractor outside a leaky sean around the shifter, fill breather or any seal on the top of the transmission

Definatly change the oil and filter and try to get all the milky oil out before puttin the new stuff in

Oil should be changed every 200 hours, or in your case now. check for leak water is getting in trans. It uses N/H 134 type would not use anything else as it has wet brakes. I have a 1715 I changed mine at 60 hours the last time as i had to tear down for repair.

Thanks for all the answers. Great site. My fill plug was missing for a while, until I could get a new one. I think that is how the water got in. I sharpened the blades on my bushog while I was down. I think it will do better. Does anybody know where I night get new fenders for this tractor. That would realy dress it up not to mention keep me from tearing my pants when I slid down after working.
