IHC M Battery

Just purchased an M Farmall and it didn"t have a battery in it. My book says a postive ground but my other M has a Negative ground. Which way should it be. It has Battery Ignition.

Really depends on the charging system. If it still has a generator hook it up positive ground (which is original) and if it has an alternator then shoot for negative ground. Sam

are the old battery cables still on it?if they are, then its kinda selfexplanetory.(+ or - posts are different sizes)

Look at the coil to see what the polarity is. If the "-" coil terminal is connected to the distributor and "+" to the battery switch, it's negative ground. 12V systems would be negative ground, 6V are positive. It may have a 12V generator, which would still be negative ground. If it has a generator, it should be marked if it's 12V, and it would likely have a resistor in line with the coil, or the coil would be marked 12V. Starter will turn in the correct direction whether 6V or 12V, regardless of which battery terminal is grounded.
