How to Use tractor no LPTO or ORC

When powering a rotary cutter without live power take off and no overrunning clutch 1. Throttle back to idle (May have to ride brake)2. Shift PTO out and it will soon coast to a stop. 3. Throttle up and make turn 4. 4. shift PTO and continue working. I have used this system on old tractors for almost 60 years and have had no trouble. When I started driving tractors the only tractor onn the farm with LPTO was an Oliver 77 and 88. We used this system on the farmalls.

What do you do while bush hogging and suddenly discover an obstruction, ditch pond etc?
If you can't afford at least an over running clutch. Sell everything off and do something else.

This is good advice for those who do it now, and have been doing it for 10s of years. and wouldn't change for any reason. It is bad advice for every one else. A clutch is much cheaper than a medical bill. Jim

60 Acre,

I would not be so presumptuous as to argue with you when you have that much experience. I would say, however, that I wouldn't even think about going out onto my farm without an ORC when I'm bushhogging. My farm is VERY hilly, very rough, and I never know in advance when I'm going to come to some kind of obstruction (like a tree limb on the ground that I can't see under the grass and weeds).

I usually have to change my underwear after bushhogging a steep hill even with the ORC.

Good luck with your procedure.

Oh, come on, B&D...

I would Never want an ORC on my Bush Hog..if I MUST make an emergency stop, I can bring it to a stop and be sliding the rear wheels with my JD "B"..
and that is a 6' Hog...

At NO time do I want to be in a situation where someone walks up to my equipment and I have to sit there, looking stupid..while we both wait 2 minutes for the Bush Hog to stop..
If the equipment is not properly prepared, an ORC will not be a good answer.
Maybe you are referring to an "8N" or something light..??
I am not familiar with any newer "feather-weight" tractors..maybe than ORC is the only way they can safely be operated..??
All I have to say is that would be a very Sad state of affairs...
All you need are very Good brakes and an attentive operator..

Ron..

All that is fine if you have hundreds of hours behind the wheel of a tractor and have common sense but now days few people have either one so the ORC and or live PTO is a must have. I would not and never will tell a person how to get by with out live PTO or an ORC. Why you ask because doing so could well get some one hurt or worse dead so just because you or I can do it does not mean it is smart to do so or safe to do so. And yes you may have done it for decades but one of these days you might end up hurt because you did not see something. That is like using a tractor with a loader and having it up high with a load. Ya you might get by with it but it is just plan stupid to do so

Hope you have good insurance, a good hospital near by and a will. WHY take such chances with your safety over a $60 part.

Yes, it can be done, 60. I too have done it but why would one wish to do so when one can buy an ORC for $50-$60?

I think the advice from both sides is good. But what we have to remember is that the majority of tractor owners these days, and I would bet the majority of posters here, never had to "make do" very much. This site isn't as bad as some but I still see a lot of suburban commandos who can't imagine having to make do with whatcha got.

Well, I feel a responsibility for Control of my equipment..
I have used an ORC and was not satisfied with that LACK of Control of the mower..
Actually, I feel I have more control of it with NO live power to the PTO..
But, the live PTO is nice for obvious reasons..
I just would feel like He?? if an animal got too close and I could not STOP the mower..
Maybe it is a view I developed from USING them so many years..
I can see that mine is not a popular view on this, but it has merit...

To make it clear, I just wanted to help you to not be clashing gears. Also i mow the same fields several times each year.I was driving the o0ld iron when many of yout granddads were also learning. WE did the best we could with the old farmalls and could not justify a new Oliver just for the Live PTO, but we lusted for them at the county fair.

Lets all save money and just use an outhouse instead of that new fangled indoor plumbing.
Worked good enough for Grandpa and Grandma.
