96 Poncho Grand Am tach speedometer

Hi, Got into the 96 pontiac grand am yesterday morning and the tach & speedometer wasn't working. The needles don't even budge. The other guages in the panel work and the fuse is ok. I'm fairly sure this is an electronic unit although the odometer is the old style rolling number type and it is still working.

Parts guy at gm said they just pull the instrument panel out and send them to gm at 300 bux a pop. Guess I'd rather look for a sending unit or bad connection before ripping into the dash if I knew where to look. Any ideas here? Thanks in advance.

Pull the instrument cluster out, unplug it and re-install.

The terminals sometimes get a light coating of corrosion on them and by unplugging and plugging back in,they will clean themselves. If it does work again, smear a dab of dielectric grease on the terminals.

Otherwise,a junkyard cluster is in order.

The test is have your local GM tech connect the Tech 2 (GM's scan tool) and do an instrument cluster gauge sweep. The gauge sweep is simply telling the cluster to move the pointers from the lowest to highest readings. If a pointer doesn't move, replace the cluster. Very common problem. Having the odometer working is a dead giveaway that the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is working. Vehicle speed could also be measured by the anti lock brake module from the wheel speed sensors and relayed to the cluster via serial data. I'd have to look to be sure.

Thanks so far. Is there any special way to open up the speedometer to check it out. I can't see where it comes loose without a chisel.

I have the 2000 ford f150 with 5.4L engine that has the bad soldier joint or which needs to be resoldered. I'm not sure how to pop the dash on that model.

Do some checking around for a speedometer shop. If you can locate one locally, they will probably repair your cluster a lot cheaper than taking it to the dealer (who will probably send it to the same shop anyway).
Good Luck and God Bless
