Ferguson TO-20

Hi All,

I just purchased this tractor. It"s in pretty good shape and runs, at least mostly. I"ve noticed two problems. One, if I drive the tractor up hill, even a small incline, it quits, almost instantly. To start it again, I have to wait a few minutes. Two, it has a cracked exhaust manifold (which I knew before purchasing) and no muffler. At night, I can see a blue flame comimg out of the exhaust port (which would normally connect to the muffler). I also noticed that the side of the exhaust manifold that"s cracked has a different appearance than the other half. The crack is at the end of the manifold on #4 cyclinder. I can send photos to explain. The blue flame is sporadic, but appears more than not. Is this normal?

Any ideas on either issue would be appreciated.

the blue flame is normal on every engine except a steam engine, you"ll have to search for a muffler for it, measure the pipe diameter, and the amount of room you have if your going to do a under belly exhaust and visit your local muffler shop, can also do a verticle exhaust to the side of the hood

should have added you'll have to do some searching for a manifold for the tractor, might post in the want adds here

hey richard ,sounds like you are running out of fuel. there is tiny elbow at the carburator where the fuel line goes to the carb. on the end of that elbow inside the carb is a screen. make sure it is clean. that is the most likely place for the pluggage. be careful taking it apart the screen is attached to the elbow. don't tear it off. finding parts for your manifold and exhaust is as easy as going to the tractor parts in the upper left of this screen and finding your tractor and then the parts listed. manifolds are 130 and exhaust is 45 dollars. other places have them as well but right there they are. post your message on the ferguson forum also. lots of good mechanics for those tractors over there.

Hi Richard, If cleaning that screen on elbow does
not help, try soaking that carb o'nite in a good
carb soaking solution. Take it all apart-the carb
cleaner will remove the "lime" and it is worth
the effort. Chuck

I should have added that once in a while the sed.
bowl assembly (deep on the inside) will also lime
up and also could be soaked (or replaced)

I"d also check the float setting in the carb.

Check your timimng and the centrifugal advance mechanism because it may be retarded and that might becausing the "blue flame". Make sure that your power jet mixture is not to lean. The powwer jet should never be less than one full turn out.
