growing Spelt

Can anyone tell me what exactly spelt is and do you plant it in the spring or fall. I know some was grown in Lancaster Pa. Thanks
 
It looks like a cross between wheat and rye. Huge heads, and big kernals. It was grown around here (NW ND) for a few years as a feed grain, but the bottom fell out of the market, and I haven't heard of any for 25+ years, now. Too bad, too, because it was a hardy crop, not bothered much by weeds or other adversaries.
 
BIG WHOOPS! My bad. I was thinking of triticale. Spelts was also a feed grain grown around here, and suffered the same fate as triticale. Spelt kernals were smaller, more like wheat. Both were spring planted.
 
It is a type of wheat. Seems to be making a comeback with the foodies and local grown movement.
 
I grow some spelts every year. I plant mine in the fall just like winter wheat. I have not seen any spring spelts but there might be some. Spelts are the grand dad of wheat. Spelts where grow years before wheat. I like them because they are sweeter than wheat and high in fiber. I use them to start creep feeding my beef calves. Cattle seem to like them and they will not founder on them. They have enough fiber to off set the protein. The straw is taller than wheat. My cattle like to eat it too. LOL I square bale the spelt straw. I have some old stalls that I have to hand bed and clean. I use them for my problem calving pens. I had an older cow in there and she would leave her hay in the manger and eat all of the spelt straw.
 
We sow Speltz in the fall here. Works better than oats because you don"t have to worry about getting out there in spring to pant. Supposed to feed out better than oats too.
 
I grow a small amount of triticali for som organic poultry producers.they say it has more nutritionthan other grains.
 
Spelt is a softer grain than wheat. It is used by people who are wheat intolerant. It is used as a replacement for durham and all the harder grains It is harder to bake with than those grains. People with Celiac disease use it. And of course it is more expensive than wheat.
