De-scaling the cooling system?

I read somewhere (maybe on here) that someone recommended de-scaling the cooling system. I would imagine that this would remove alot of the rust and slug deposits in the cooling system. One question I have is what the heck do you use? I can"t recall seeing a "de-scaling" solution at an autoparts store.

Didn"t want to look like a fool at the auto parts store so figure I would hide behind the keyboard :)

You may try a regular hvac supplier. I used a product called Con-Coil in my radiator on my H and it did quite a number on the sludge and buildup. Also at a supplier like that I think they are a little more knowledgable, and as long as you know the metals that make up your radiator they will know which products would be safe.

Most scaling in a cooling system is caused by the fact most people use water right out of the tap to go in the system and most ground water has lime in it and lime does in fact make scales in the system. One easy and cheap way to remove it is to drain the system and fill it with vinegar and run it for an hour or 2. Then with it still warm not hot drain the vinegar let it cool all the way and then flush with a garden hose. Then refill the system with antifreeze and water mix preferably distilled water so as to stop the scales

You can get various products at NAPA or other such places that are simply called cooling system flush, fast flush, etc. Just follow the directions, then make sure you do a very good job of flushing that stuff out when you're done. Most I think are a phosphoric acid so be carefull with them...
I find those products take out a lot of crap and gunk. I don't have a big problem with scale tho...
I never had much luck with vinegar for what I need to clean out either.

Just remember to pull the block drain (and don't open the drains, REMOVE THEM), the rad drain and the lower rad hose and make sure you spend a lot of time backflushing both the block and rad until you get all the crap out. Once that's done it should help it run a lot cooler.

would lime away type stuff work in a radiator to remove buildup.. A freind ,93, has a radiator shop. One dat i say him connecting a wire rom the neg battery post to the radiator on his car.he said it would keep buildup and electrolisis from ruining the radiator.I figure he knows a thing or two.

dishwasher tabs work real good to clean the system. If it's real rough, you can use the stuff to clean coffee pots.
