My 94 2500 set for a while last winter (month and a half) with a dead battery. After I put a new battery in the radio was dead. With the power off the display showes 1:00. Power on it showes 106.5 fm (station I listen to) and then changes to 1:00 again. The volume, bass, treb, scan, seek, fade, balance all show but do not work. The am/fm and preset buttons do not work. Kid down the road said that GM used a antitheft system that locks the radio when power is disconected. If this is true how does it get unlocked? Thanks for any help.

my 99 has THEFT-LOC but I don't know if they had that in 94. If true you will need a code to unlock it - hopefully the previous owner wrote it down somewhere.

Good tunes,
Bill

GM does use theft lock in some of their radios but likely not in your '94. Is that the one with radio controls up on the dash and usually a cassette player in the middle of the dash? If so they are prone to electrical problems, probably a bad connection somewhere inside the radio. Unfortunately there is a third piece up under the dash which could have a problem. You might do well to check a scrap yard and try to find the radio control and "brain" box.

Edit: when a theft lock radio is locked it usually will read "loc" on the display.

Inno, yes it does have a cassette player in the middle of the dash. Kind of a sad looking little thing that I assumed was a add-on before I got this truck. With the radio display showing things like it does the brain box sounds like it would be worth a gamble. Thanks for your post.

Disconnect your battery cable (both of them) for at least 1/2 hour and reconnect. Your battery must be fully charged and then give this a try.

If it has theft loc you can take it to a dealership and have it reset. If I remember right my cousin replaced a battery and his radio locked and he couldn't remember the code he put in. He took it to the dealership and there is a factory code they use. But I think it did show lock on it and wouldn't do anything. His is a 98. Good luck.

If it was locked with the theft lock it will say "LOC" on the display and will do nothing else. This is not your problem. Now as to what your problem is, I do not know, try disconnecting the battery again and then let it sit for a while.

A lot of GM vehicles of that age had separate pieces, that cassette deck in the middle of the dash was right from the factory! The brain box is right behind the ash tray. It'll have plugs from the radio control, the cassette player and the antenna as well as plugs to the vehicle for speakers and power. You'll need a 7mm or 9/32 nut driver to remove 3 screws.......some of the connectors are on the top side and you have to take the screws out and lower the box to get to 'em.
I took out many of these years ago....unfortunately most of 'em were scrapped.

Alternately you can get a dash kit and wiring harness to install an aftermarket deck where the cassette player is. Unfortunately it is probably the more expensive and complicated vehicles to install in.
