johnson grass

Johnson grass is best treated in the fall after it has been cut. It has a root sysyem that has to be attacked - not what you can see above the ground. Had a guy treat his like that.

actually pigs will kill it by rooting the stolans out of the ground. old farmers tale is to plow it up on the 21st of august

Yes they certainly will kill it, you dont see any in regular "pasture" do you? I have thought about planting it but youd have to do it every year. And where would you get seed?

It makes great hay as well, and so does crab grass.

Have a part of pasture cut off for hay. Johnson grass was starting to make headway. Let cows back in. before last frost in spring, kept them on it for 2 years, took them off this spring and noticed one or two sprigs when I cut hay. Conventional wisdom is to leave cows on for 5 years to kill it. However, if you feed hay with Johnson grass seed in it cows will spread it.

If its in a lawn, weekly mowing for a few years will kill it.

If it is in a garden staying after it with a hoe will control it. The stolons(roots) must be dug up.

Killing it with Roundup takes several applications.

No you do not have to plant it every year. Why do you think it is such a problem? I doubt you can buy any seed. I think it is listed as a noxious weed.

MSMA, Imazapic, Metsulfuron, and Clethodym come to mind as being effective on it, depending on where it's growing (some of these couldnt be be broadcast). Spot treating with glyphosate would probably work as well.

Like railhead said it does make good hay, if cut right time, and cows will eat it. I believe there is a chance of nitrate poisoning.

In Indiana, Johnson Grass is one of five invasive weeds that the state can force a property owner to eradicate if it so chooses.

It is most certainly a perennial.

I remember our local Co-op had a old seeding chart on the wall that had johnson grass on it , I foget what the rate was . I have two bottom fields that was covered in the stuff , planted hay in them and pasture them also and have very little johnson grass in them now but it has taken awhile . When I was row cropping them I could not control it .

I dont think it is a problem. I am a cattle guy not a row cropper. I wish I had more and more and more. outside my pasture fences it is abundant. My cattle keep it clean in their area.
