Marine Battery Life Span

What is a reasonable life span for a marine battery? I use two hooked up in parallel to a Universal Power Supply to power a sump pump in my basement. They are not used much, only during power outage. They have a date of 03/07 on them. How much longer can I expect them to live?

Hello Griz,
The life of a battery is always connected with the kind of discahrging cycles it goes through.
A battery should last the warranty period plus.
In your application i would think at least 25 to 50% longer then the warranty. If they go totally dead while in service, they may not survive that much discharge.

has to do with how you discharge them and how you charge them... a good intelligent charger will make the last longer. A good discharge once a year with immediate recharge will also help clean the plates. A sulfide aware charger is important. Otherwise you can can the batteries in as quick as 3 months.. you must keep the acid above the plates as well. Never leave the batteries discharge more than a few minutes,, more than 24 hours or damage will occur.

What's the make ? The cheaper ones have thinner plates than pricer ones

I have 2 heavy Rolls marine deep cycle batteries on my boat, about 10 years old and still good. Made by Surrette Battery Co. Expensive but they last.

The trick is to always keep them charged, like others said with a smart charger.

These are Wally Whorld's finest. The UPS keeps them charged, 26.8v. Guess, I'll have to unplug the UPS during a rainy stretch and how long she can keep the basement dry. Sounds like that could be good for the batteries.
