1944 John Deere D

I haven't gave up trying to get my 1944 John Deere D started, but nothing that I have tried so far has worked. It has a new rebuilt wico mag (and hot) new spark plugs gap set at 30,and new wires.I cleaned the carb out as best as I can. The float chamber fills with gas. I timed it as the manuel shows. This is a hand start. It wanted to fire a few times, but just won't start. Any advise would be welcome. Les

I"d be tempted to pull start it a few times (assuming it will) just so you can get the carburetor set, and running right.

On our hand start Ds, we give it partial throttle (mostly back), with FULL choke, until it fires. Once it fires, we open the choke, and continue cranking, and they usually run in a few turns.

The first time we started a newly rebuilt "38 hand start, it took three of us, taking turns, and quite a bit of time before it ran the first time.

Lester,
Did you confirm that you have spark?
Have you checked your breaker points in the mag to see that they are not oxidized and are shiny clean?

Thanks for the info about the D. I will check the points in the mag. I just assumed that they were set right as it arrived from the mag shop only recently. Les
