front end loader

The shaft on front end loader just broke. Its a 4000 ford with a factory frond end loader. It looks like there is a coupling between the front external pump and where it attaches to the engine. Is this going to be a major repair.

Sounds like you're describing the drive shaft for an engine driven pump mounted to the front of the tractor.

Shouldn't be too bad. Those shafts are either a left hand thread into the adapter that will be bolted to the front pulley, or splined. The splines could be partially worn, needing you to turn the shaft the opposite direction of the normal rotation to try and unlock the splines from each other, which could add to the difficulty.

Lots of tractors use the same type of setup, but there are different lengths and types of adapters that bolt to the front pulley.

Most I've seen break, did so because they were ground almost in two by the axle. The axle pivot pin had worn out and let the axle/bushing intrude into the space where the pump shaft was turning. If this is your situation, the pivot pin and bushing will have to be replaced, of course, before you can successfully replace the pump shaft.

thanks for the help. Got to look at it today and found that the shaft is in 2 pieces with a coupler tying them together. The 2 bolts holding them together had come out. Replaced them and back in business.
